After his journey, Ascalaphus was left more confused and more socially anxious than ever. There is such a wide diversity of dragons in sornieth, and that isn't inspiring to him, it's just intimidating. Ascalaphus prefers to just to odd jobs that his much more well put together dad, Cerastes, tells him to do.

All his life, he has been surrounded by people who know what they want, and he has no idea why or how they do. His older sister, Cygnus, is a passionate biologist who researches out in the southern icefield and his younger sister, Strix, takes after their parents, learning to be a focused fighter. Ascalaphus has always felt lost and sidelined, despite his parent's love and support, since his family don't understand him at all.

Ascalaphus started a tea shop because his parents liked tea, and also helps the clan excavate materials from local mines because he has an athletic build and so was encouraged by his parents. He still feels just as lost as he always has but at least he has an outlet for his energy and frustration.
