A dark cart hulks at the side of the road, almost hidden among several other shadowed buildings. The streetlamps give an eerie glow, shining down on the silent streets. It seems a ghost town to those who do not see the lone hatchling sitting patiently in the alleyway.

The darkness of the sky dwindles from black to purple. Stars fade. Clouds shine pink against the brightening expanse. A figure arrives with the dawn, unlocking the cart’s door and stepping in. Light emanates from the windows, and a silhouette can be seen working. For a bakery, the morning is the busiest and most demanding time. Headway is crucial.

The silhouette makes its way to the side of the bakery cart, where the hatchling is laying. A door opens, a plate is offered, the baker returns to work. Treats are devoured. Danishes, doughnuts, turnovers, muffins… When the hatchling has its fill, leftovers are packed up, and the orphan disappears into the darkness as the baker opens up shop.
