From an early age- perhaps always- Stain saught to be the perfect Gaoler, a shining example of her breed and a respected member of the Icewarden's ranks. Really, she never saw any other choice. How could she? The world was ice and rock and horrors unknown- to be known, perhaps, but only to a select few. The outside could never know. The outside would never know. And- for centuries now- they would never know the outside.

Of course, nothing ever goes as planned. Just as Ice melts and Shade drips out, so too do the plans of mere dragons shatter into the sea. Things were going well, too- she was precise in words and action alike: Efficient in speech to the point of bluntness, obedient in work down to the letter, and quick to strongarm herself out of a fight. It was close competition- it always was, it had to be- but she was the top of her class.

It was nearly the day she would join an order- *her* order. Stain- not known as such at the time, of course- was planning on joining the Overseers or Sentinels, should they accept her. Rejection was unlikely, but not impossible- hence focusing on two possibilities rather than merely one. Regardless, as the valedictorian, her parents would doubtless be proud of her. Even if they hardly saw each other, what with their work and her training. They- the Gaolers- were the first, last, and *only* line of defense between the very Shade itself and the outside world.

Or so she had been told.
