Clan Role:
Shade Research Courier

The path was quiet and peaceful, but there was something unsettling about it. It wasn’t something new. It was the same thing that permeated every path, every lair, every forest, field, and dragon that Smolderhusk had ever seen. The insidious corruption of the Shade.

Since becoming an adult, she couldn’t help but feel that the world had turned itself inside out without moving. As a child, like most gaolers, she had been born with keen senses and the ability to detect the scent of the Shade. She had no idea what that scent was in her innocent years; it was the one scent common to everything, so she had thought it was the scent of the world, some common force that made all and everyone a part of the same world. She grew up without parents, and no one really bothered to explain the truth until she was much older.

It was true that the scent had never exactly been… pleasant. It wasn’t the same sort of smell, but it sometimes made her think of dark, musty hiding holes. She had no idea why the smell of the world was scary and awful, but as a small hatchling, the whole world seemed big and wide and intimidating anyway. Maybe it was awful because all the stuff everything was made of came from some weird god from the past, or maybe it was just a smell she didn’t like, like the roasted dodo’s feet that some of the older dragons loved to eat. No matter what seasonings they put on it, somehow, they always managed to still smell like feet.

However, she had never thought of the scent as something evil or truly “bad.” It was the smell of the world, and the world had orphaned her, but had also given her friends and good food and festivals and a home. There was no reason to suspect that the smell was a hint of something vile. When she grew up and found other gaolers, she learned the truth; she finally learned about the Shade, how it had almost devoured the world that she loved so much, and that it had soaked into planet without anyone knowing how. The common thread in all things, the very smell of Sornieth, was revealed to be nothing but its most feared enemy.

Smolderhusk now worked as a courier for Shade researchers, collecting samples from various parts of the world as requested and delivering them safely to her fellow gaolers. She sat beside an empty path, resting her paws from miles of traveling and the weight of provisions and samples slung over her back. It was a beautiful day, with a bright but mild sun shining over a lake in a field of rippling grass. But the smell was here too. The smell of the thing that wanted to consume all…

As she rested, an old guardian began limping his way along the path, body covered in scars. He approached Smolderhusk with a kind, though a bit crooked and toothless, smile.

“I’m very sorry to bother you, miss, but I was hoping to sketch some scenery from my travels for my niece, and my ink bottle’s gotten smashed. If you have a bottle of ink you can spare, I can pay you for it. It won’t be another couple of days until I reach the next market,” he inquired. Smolderhusk knew this route – the next cluster of civilization was in fact two days away. She offered him a spare bottle of ink.

“Ah, thank you so very much. Here, take this for your trouble.” He held out a small pouch of treasure.

“Oh, you don’t need to pay me back. It wasn’t very expensive or anything,” Smolderhusk replied.

“Well, still, it’s the principle of the thing,” he said, tossing the pouch onto her backpack.

Smolderhusk glanced at the pouch, feeling that there had been far too loud a clank of coin for what the ink was really worth. At the same time, she didn’t want to insult the kind stranger by refusing his gift.

“Are you traveling by yourself?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Would you like me to accompany you? You’re heading for the town two days from here along this path, yes? That’s also where I’m going, it won’t be out of my way,” she offered.

“That’s very kind of you. I suppose I’d like the company. I’m not quite used to traveling by myself yet.” He smiled, but his tone was mournful.

“You’re used to traveling with a group?”

“Hehe, not a group, no. Just me and… and Hickory, usually. But Hickory’s gone ahead, so to speak. I always assured him that I’d outlive him… but old age caught up with him a lot faster than it did with me. He was my Charge, you know…”

The old guardian trailed off, gulping back tears. Smolderhusk fished around in her pack and found him a clean napkin.

“I didn’t mean to pry…” she began, but the old guardian waved his paw.

“No, no, it’s alright. I’m just still trying to get used to it. I did my duty – I protected him until the very end, and I have the scars to prove it. But I wasn’t able to stop death itself. We were like brothers, even though he was a centaur, and since he couldn’t fly, I’d go everywhere he went to make sure he got there safely. Some dragons are a bit twitchy around Beastclan folk they don’t know… with good reason sometimes, I suppose… I could have decided to fly to the town, save myself a lot of time, but I’m so used to walking. It’s odd not having him here. It’s all the same world, the same dirt and the same trees and the same sky, but somehow it doesn’t feel the same at all now.”

Smolderhusk looked uncomfortably down at her paws. She knew a similar feeling; only her feeling was caused by the intrusion of a new fact, instead of the absence of a person. The world was the same world, and yet, it was a different place entirely…

“Well, I’ll walk with you to the town. I know I’m probably not a substitute for the one you lost, but at least you won’t be alone.”

“Again, I really do appreciate it. That’s why my niece invited me to visit – she knows I’m taking this hard and could use some company. I haven’t seen her in a long time. She’s a good soul. It’ll be good to see her again and remember that the world I loved isn’t entirely gone.”

Those words resonated with Smolderhusk. As she walked with the old guardian, exchanging tales of the past, she pondered them. The smell of the Shade still clung to her nostrils, but she realized that it was still one smell in a symphony of scents, of the flowers and the earth and the rain that all were a part of the same Sornieth. And, the more she thought about it, she had been right all along. The smell of the Shade was the smell that united the world, the smell of a Sornieth that still thrived and persevered against the terror as it always had. And, through her efforts and those of the others, perhaps it always would.
