“Whatever you are physically...male or female, strong or weak, ill or healthy--all those things matter less than what your heart contains. If you have the soul of a warrior, you are a warrior. All those other things, they are the glass that contains the lamp, but you are the light inside.”

- Cassandra Clare

”ENOUGH!”

Aeris flinched as the word echoed through the cavern. Distracted, she barely had time to duck past her opponent’s claws and try roll out of reach. Despite her quick reflexes, she could feel the scrape of mighty talons against her back and the heat of torn flesh. Before she could return the favor, something wrapped around her hind legs and yanked her off her feet.

Dazed and confused, the violet-hued Imperial hung helplessly from the grip of a massive dragon. As she swung lightly side-to-side, she watched as the dragon strung up her opponent in much the same manner. She writhed her serpentine body in a futile effort to be released, but was forced to hang like a roasted duck while the dragon hissed something to her opponent and tossed him towards the entrance of the cavern. ”I’ll deal with you later.” the dragon called out after her fleeing rival, before turning it’s full attention to the squirming Imperial.

Aeris was dropped unceremoniously onto the dirt floor without warning. The scratches on her back stung as she quickly scrambled to get her feet under her and face the elephantine wyvern before her. It was actually a he – and he did not look happy.

”What have I told you about battling with your den mates?” He snarled, fangs gleaming in the dim faelight of the cavern. ”You need to control yourself. If you’re wounded, you’re no use to the clan.” A dull ache began to emanate from the shallow wounds in her back, but Aeris kept her gaze steady. If she showed any weakness now, the dragon would only have more ammunition to use against her. They stared at each other in silence for an eternity before the male spoke once more.

”Tomorrow. Dawn. Meet me at the bottom of the footpath. You’ll get your battle then.”

---

Aeris woke the next morning before the sun had chased away the night. She could still feel the sting of the cuts along her back but she paid them no mind as she quickly scarfed down her breakfast and readied herself as best she could. She had no idea what the massive wyvern had in store for her, but she’d be damned if she wasn’t at least a little prepared. Grabbing a small pack filled with supplies she had readied the night before, the violaceous Imperial hurriedly made her way towards the rendezvous point.

A thin line of gold was beginning to appear on the horizon when Aeris finally caught sight of the colossal male. He was already waiting for her, idly tracing patterns in the dirt. He did not speak to her as she approached. Instead, he turned and began walking deeper into the wooded area beyond their lair. The chill morning air worked its way beneath her scales and into her bones as the young Imperial ventured further away from home than she ever had before.

Eventually, they began to come upon monsters. As Aeris fought them off ferociously, the enormous male sat back and watched with a wise eye. He would give her pointers now and then – correcting her form, teaching her a new technique – but for the most part, the violet Imperial was forced to brawl with the monsters alone.

---

For months, this was her ritual – up before daybreak and fighting monsters until dusk. Aeris woke up sore and miserable more times than she could count, but nothing could stop her love of the sport. It helped that her kills were helping to protect and feed the rest of the clan. She had never felt more a part of the community – there was no longer a need to prove herself in a dim-lit cavern.

One day, the male did not follow her into the woods. When Aeris looked back at the wyvern in confusion, he cracked the smallest of smiles and waved her on. ”You no longer need me, young one.” The Imperial hesitated, looking down at the male before looking back towards the woods.

Before she could speak, a sudden realization hit her. The male she had for so long literally looked up to now only came up to her shoulders. She gasped, but as an Imperial it was inevitable that she would begin towering over other dragons. It also meant she was old enough to do this on her own.

With a smile, Aeris turned and continue walking further down the path. Armed with her newfound confidence and her teacher’s blessing, she knew today was going to be one hell of a day for monsters.
