The Poisoned Mind | The Black Mamba

━━━━━━━━━━
“Have you ever tried drinking poison? You must start with something very mild, only a few drops at first. You will likely become violently ill. Perhaps you will even lose a limb or two. But do it long enough, and you will become quite used to it.”

» Biography

Hypnotic beauty is a poison all by itself and, as an alchemist, Venril appreciates not only his craft but all things beautiful. His rich black markings and mottled wings are accentuated by purposefully chosen adornments that compliment the already gracious Skydancer. Every move is carefully calculated, every word tasted before it’s spoken, and every smile masking a hidden agenda.

He was once the alchemist of a clan unnamed, and the title bestowed upon him was not only in reference to his means of testing that which he makes, but also how deep the indoctrination of his old clan had spread within the young and impressionable dragon. His dedication to that which he believed in - to his leader - went above and beyond that of the other dragons around him. For the lack of a better comparison, Venril was in love with what he believed in, dedicating every waking moment to it and resting only when his work was done. He was admirable to the leader, who considered Venril a success in terms of the completed indoctrination, but the leader's advisors saw the danger that the alchemist could present to them should they dare cross paths with a dragon more acolyte than simple believer. He was as likely to be their executioner as he was their saviour and, until a dragon began to choke on their own blood after ingesting even a single drop of Venril’s poison, they were never sure which he was.

Now, however, Venril is allied to no one, and instead travels with a pearlcatcher mercenary who, despite her very vocal 'disliking' of the alchemist, will be damned before she allows another to harm the skydancer. While they aren't always seen together, Venril has the uncanny ability to be able to locate her despite her many attempts to cover her tracks, and always seems to find her in the end. He's incredibly fond of the huntress despite their almost constant bickering and the fact that she blatantly refuses to use his poisons for any of her hunts, and, although she doesn't like to admit it, the feeling is mutual. Not many dragons can put up with Krysteena's silver tongue and foul nature, but Venril isn't shy to bite back whenever she lashes out and matches her petty insults with his own in such a way that the pearlcatcher cannot help but enjoy his company. He's like a breath of fresh air in a dry, barren wasteland - which is very ironic considering his favoured pastime.

Yet, the most beautiful things are often the most deadly and that is something best not forgotten with Venril. While he's no longer allied with his old clan, Venril still retains much of his previous nature. He’s enthusiastic about his work and can happily chatter about it for hours, even if he does have a tendency to try and offer ‘free samples’, but he has also kept with him the underlying cruelty and sadistic jaded tint to his iridescent beauty. Even as he presents his findings to the those who would listen with an air of innocence, it was by his skilled intervention that entire clans were murdered in the most horrific and agonising ways possible. It was he who would condemn dragons to death if he believed them to be of wavering faith and it will always be him who is the poison in the wine. No amount of gentle persuasion and a new home to foster a healthier mentality will fix what he has done and, as long as those memories remain, there will always be that underlying potential.

Perhaps, then, it’s fitting that the dragon of such beautiful potential is marred by a cruel and unforgiving scar upon the right side of his face. Venril is more than aware of the effects of poison on the body and the mind, more so than anyone else may realise, and is no stranger to the pain it brings. Like his personality, which appears light and friendly from the outside (if a little too enthusiastic), Venril appears to be a dragon of few flaws, what with the way he has dressed and presented himself. Yet, like the ugly scar that he does his best to hide, there’s a darker and much less pleasant side to the alchemist that, if brought out, is terrifying to behold.

- Still Venril, still an alchemist, and still chugs poison like he likes it
- Now a travelling alchemist who works with Krys/is a weird travelling companion she can't get rid of and/or always manages to find her
- Krys claims she hates him and blatantly refuses to use his poison in her hunts, but she'll be damned if she lets him get hurt
- Venril hates Vizier, who he sees as an inferior alchemist on account of Vizier's body practically falling apart, and the two often insult one another
- Voice is all gross bc he drinks poison
- On Korven's radar as a possible paragon recruit for the eventual preservations, as he has no intentions of taking Vizier with him
- Insults everyone bc he thinks he's better than them. It's part of his charm when it comes to Krys bc she scares off most dragons, but Venril puts up with it and bites back in such a way she almost enjoys it. Almost.
- Still freakishly lanky and ill-looking, but he is handsome. Somehow.
