her name comes from the ancient greek téphra (τέφρα), meaning "ash". the modern definition of the word tephra is "any solid material or debris ejected by a volcano."
tephra is a seer, a diviner, just as azel (her teacher) is. while azel’s methods are largely traditional water flight divination techniques that she studied for years upon years, tephra is a spark, a natural talent. her specialty- dreams- found her, whether she was ready or not. she still hasn’t sorted out how she feels about her role and her future, but is cautiously walking towards it.
tephra was born with both fire and light magic streaming through her blood, but something more was there from the very first moment. she was young when her dreams started changing, from playful scenes to mystifying omens of deep pressure and the overwhelming crash of angry waves. one night when she was still young, her claws refused to rest after she had fallen asleep. after waking in confusion to unfamiliar noises and smells, tephra realized she was somewhere completely new... was she stolen in the night? surprised, but not afraid, a feeling of closure washed over tephra's scales- she had been dreaming about this for months.
azel found her first and comforted her, eventually becoming her mentor and guardian. tephra has come to peace that she will be in arcadia for the indefinite future- she likes it there, even if how breathless she gets just from gazing at the sea leaves her deeply unsettled. however, if a way out were to one day materialize, tephra wouldn't think twice about following her crush, veldfire. she's aware that veldfire's time is very different from her own, and as much as she loves adventure, deep down she secretly hopes for veldfire to come to the republic, for arcadia to stay as it is. tephra feels, sometimes, as though she’s living on the very edge of a cliff that nobody but herself can see.
