S A C R O S A N C T unwilling • dreamer • unfaltering «- - - - - - - - - - - - - ❖ - - - - - - - - - - - - -» Every night, the same endeavour. Sacrosanct had been trying for days, which turned to weeks, to months, to years. The same near-hopeless attempt to speak to those who will neither heed her call nor remember it. She's been trapped and cursed for as long as she can remember. The whole debacle with the witch and the wishes and the blessing and the damned spindle-- she spent a whole month cursing her fate in the prison of her own dreams. After that, she refuses to shed a tear for herself. Unbreakable curse. Ha. She'll show them. It takes a month and a half of practise, but eventually she gets it. Sacrosanct knows better than to call for help from dragons through their dreams-- they'll dismiss her as a recurring nightmare at best. No, what she needs is a dragon who traverses dreams as easily as a Windborn traverses the Crescendo. She needs a Walker. Eventually, she finds one. An imperial with patterned scales and bronze-and-turquoise wings, who genuinely seems to care about the dragons whose dreams he encounters. Sacrosanct watches one night in the dream of a hatchling as the imperial vanquishes a creature of shadow and teeth, moulding it into a softer, sweeter thing. She can almost feel the relieved, contented sigh of the hatchling whose dream he'd stepped into, and she knows, then, that he is who she needs. Still, it feels wrong to spy on someone like this. Somewhere, far away and long ago, she can almost hear her parents chide her-- this is not acceptable behaviour for an heir to the throne! Her parents are dead, surely. Along with her retainer, her personal guard, the cooks, the servants, the nobles... It hurts to think of them. So she focuses all her efforts on drawing that imperial towards her, instead. Sacrosanct lets herself get careless. She lingers when she knows she should not, when every instinct screams at her to vanish before her presence is felt. It's been years since she was trained by the kingdom's assassins and years still since she played hide-and-seek in the countless rooms of her parents' castle; still, the instinct to avoid the imperial's searching gaze remains as strong as ever. But she needs to send those warnings and set the lure. One night, he wanders straight into her dream. And before him lies the stage: her bed, lit by a single shaft of light; the window behind it, showing the scene below-- a tangle of thorns nearly as far as the eye can see and the Behemoth in the distance-- and giving the imperial all the information all he needs to find her. It's simple after that. She stares into amber eyes, conveys the message, and sinks back onto the pillows. There. It's done. She's been waiting a hundred years. What's a few weeks more?
