Ein
"Imagine being judged over your birth."
  • Luck is not yours. It never was. You tumbled into the world, nothing but an unfortunate, Ice-born accident, trembling with newborn frailty before the enormity of life. Amidst the cold, amidst the frost, they looked at you and saw only ashes. Even when you were surrounded by flames and heat, to them you were only ashes.
Nothing but dirt and chaff, nothing but dust to discard. And that was what they did.
The flames cleansed everything around you, and it seemed only the ashes remained...and thus, so too did you. The world all around you was dust and ash, and so it was all yours.

  • The strangler came with you from the Southern Icefield. Its embrace was the only one you had ever known. And so that was why you took it with you, and why you continued seeking companionship among the cold, the rigid and the unyielding. Those known as the departed. Those known as the deceased.
The dead rise to greet you. You look up at them, and in their grasping claws, you see only wanting. You look into their eyes, and you see nothing there. No life, certainly...but also no hatred, no fear.
You press close; the bones clutch you closer still. Colder even than your frost-touched hide. But cradling you, not crushing. You may be cold, but you are no longer alone.

  • The smoke continues rising and falling, and those who pass by it take care not to look too closely, lest they glimpse the monstrosities that the cataclysm left behind. Still, there are those who gaze for just a second longer, and it’s you they glimpse, a single spot of brightness amidst the nightmares and the dark. “Did I just...?” they whisper in disbelief, and though they know it’s preposterous, they keep on looking. They might see more nightmares, but if they’re lucky, they’ll see you again instead. A single perfect pearl, perhaps the only vestige of innocence left to grace this tortured land.
  • The fear of the living is easy to understand, but who can say why the dead despise them in turn? Perhaps the dead seek to further swell their ranks, for when the two groups meet, violence erupts—or at least it is expected to.
The flames of war, the flames of violence—but how quickly they are extinguished, when you stand between both groups. The dead turn away; the living can flee to see another day.
Perhaps “ash” isn’t just a color. Perhaps you’re colder than you look. To many, you may remain a mystery; to others, you’re a miracle.

  • They may not know your name, but perhaps they do not need to. They give you other names instead: Child of Ashes. Child of Frost. Child of Monsters. Child of the Dead...
Such awe-inspiring epithets, but at the heart of it all— "She's nothing but a child!"
And those are the words uttered by the ash-gray traveler, diving out of the smoke, arms extended to catch you. The fear on her face—not of you, but for you, as she beholds the twisted, shambling monstrosities about to scoop you into their claws.
They get there before she does, but then the terror melts away like snow in sunlight. The realization dawns then, relief and fear twisting together, the understanding that these fiends are in reality your friends.
