The first story I read by Gaiman was "The Truth Is A Cave In The Black Mountains". I didn't understand it, but I thought it was beautiful. It is particularly good to read during the winter, when the cold and wet and loneliness of the story can truly sink in.
The first poem I read by Gaiman was "Instructions", which I agreed with very much. It lined up -- lines up? -- with my view of the world, where the supernatural is interacted with as a matter of course, where rules must be followed for success, on pain of death.
