Tide
quiet • graceful • timid |
|
“Never break the surface.”
She watched the shifting yellows overhead - the way the waves made the light flitter and dance. It was oh so bright. Tide moved her serpentine body through the water eel-like and carefully clung onto the coral that lined the Fishspine Reef. She heard a loud rhythmic thump - quick and strong. Tide tensed, ready to attack, before realising it was her own heartbeats. She sighed, bubbles escaping her mouth. She looked as they rose above, colourful fish dodging them easily, their bright scales glinting against the light. Tide withdrew and squinted. It was all so bright, too much light. She knew she wasn’t supposed to leave the Leviathan Trench, Father had told them already that night: “The dark is safe, the light will corrupt you.” They had to chant it every day, but something felt wrong, mechanical, fake… she couldn’t say it, she couldn’t think it, but Father… Her heart quickened. She had to go now. She had to do it. Tide swam as fast as she could, squeezing her eyes shut against the blinding light...
“Never break the surface”
Water rushed past her ears, a gurgle of bubbles, warmth flooded her scales. Too bright! Sand crunched beneath her feet. Too heavy! Tide's limbs seemed to become jellyfish, and she collapsed to her side. Where? I’m sorry, Father! She tried to open his eyes. The light hurt them, and she shut them again. Father, I’m sorry. Please!
A voice spoke. “Are you okay?” It was too soft to be Father’s voice - this voice was soothing, like soft blankets of kelp. The dragon dragged her across the sand, speaking of “drowning”, and telling her “It’s okay, I’ll get you somewhere dry, I’ll get the doctor to check on you. I’m sure you’re okay. You can live!” What was ‘drowning’? Tide stayed still, thinking, as the dragon continued dragging her. Everything was dry, and her scales felt itchy - the air felt strange. Was this the corruption? Did it start from the outside, and engulf her scales in flame? Or would she start burning from the inside out and explode with a pop?
“It’s okay,” a warm claw in hers. Was the light meant to be this comforting? “You’re safe, it’s fine.” Tide drifted back to sleep. Somehow she knew - she felt it! - she would be fine, it was okay…
Father couldn’t hurt her anymore.
