Brine
quick-witted • traditional • open-minded

The current changed. Brine frowned, letting his whiskers trail through the waves once more. But the fact still stood. The current had changed, in fact, it has completely turned around. Usually, the warm surface water rushed north from the southern Ashfall Waste, but this time, it seemed to flow in a southerly direction. Did he get his location mixed up? The stars above were bright, and no clouds obscured them. He carefully read them, constellations learnt from his father, who learned it from his own father - they were never wrong. He knew he was in the right place: twenty-seven nautical miles away from the coast of the Sunbeam Ruins, above the Fishspine Reef.

There was no use questioning the change in the current. Brine dropped the anchor, then readied himself at the bow of the ship. He lept lithely into the waters. Bubbles frothed at his wake as he dived down into the depths. Fish and sharks flashed by as the imperial swiftly swam. He eyed the seabed, skillfully maneuvering himself around the ruins of an unlucky ship. The shipwreck rocked with every wave, each creak of it’s splintered hull eerily echoing across the water. Brine shivered, remembering the tales of drowned sailors’ souls his grandfather had told him. He had to remind himself that no such thing existed, swallowing back his fear. He continued his search, ignoring his uneasy feelings. Amongst the ruins of a mast, Brine finally found what he was looking for: a large wooden chest, covered in barnacles and seaweed from decades of waterlog. The bolts and locks that kept it shut were probably once hard silver, but now crumbled away like dirt under his claws. He plied the soft wood of the chest apart, revealing hundreds of gems. They sparkled, untouched, protected by the chest that held them.

Satisfied with his find, Brine heaped the gems into his satchel and swam back up. The silhouette of his ship against the moonlight was clear and the chain of his anchor a guiding path that he could rely on.

A loud crack and groan suddenly sounded, and the remains of the shipwreck tilted, closing onto him. Brine had to think fast - he dodged the planks of wood that came down and grasped at the anchor - sharp pain struck his tail, it was stuck under the rubble. Another part of the ship came falling, and he yanked his tail but it came out with a deep gash, blood staining the water.

A creature swam by, too fast for him to see. Brine swam as fast as he could, the adrenaline pumping in his veins giving him a newfound energy. The creature clamped down at the anchor’s chain, dragging his ship down. He didn’t dare look down at the creature - was it a dragon, a Beastclan warrior or something far worse? He instinctively grasped at the ship’s hull. The ship sprung back up, lifting Brine along with it. Did the creature let go? He dragged himself back on deck, sparing no time to rest. Sails were up, the anchor was pulled and he immediately set sail for the shores of the Tsunami Flats with his crew.

He let his whiskers trail again through the water, and felt the warmth of the usual surface water currents. He looked back and dipped his head below the choppy waters. In the distance, there was no shipwreck. Was it all a dream? A crazy lunar night? He patted his satchel.

The gems were still there.
