Through some quirk of biology, Keelan produces much more blood than her body actually needs to function, storing the excess in her capsule. Rather than simply live with this harmless condition, she has chosen to spend her life offering this extra blood -- as well a the blood of other willing donors -- to vampires in need, so that they need not attack other dragons to sate their thirst. And that's not the only help Keelan provides her vampiric clients: she also gives them social support, counseling, and other resources to help them deal with their condition. She helps them both reach out to other vampires and/or reintegrate into ordinary dragon society, depending on the desires of the individual vampire in question. Among ordinary dragons, she advocates for acceptance and understanding of vampires; in the vampire community, she preaches nonviolence and cooperation with mortals.

Among that vampire community, Keelan is often held in high regard, especially by several powerful elder vampires whom she helped when they needed it -- and their regard often keeps her safe from those who would harm her, vampire and mortal. Keelan treats everyone she meets with kindness and care; some might consider her naive and vulnerable for this, but others reciprocate and will keep her safe.
