“You can do this. He’s your mate. All you need to do… is talk to him”
Azureskies pushed aside the thin layer of plants covering the den, once dense and thick to conceal the entrance. So much had changed in a matter months, the burrow almost completely unrecognizable.

Azure almost tripped on a glowing green rock by the entrance. She scowled at it, wishing they’d never found any of these accursed stones in the first place. The entrance’s narrow tunnel opened into a wider room, filled with messy tables covered in notes and beakers. Flasks filled with the glowing rocks and some sort of liquid greeted Azureskies as she entered, kicking aside the wires that were strewn across the floor. A few months ago, the tables would have hosted a plethora of tangled wires and machines, but all that was gone. Replaced by ominous, luminous glassware connected to a large pot in the center of the room. There was a dragon behind the pot, a green bogsneak.

“Who is it? I’m busy,” ZephyrJade muttered. He peeked his snout away from his nose and was startled to see his mate standing by the entrance. He tried to give a sincere smile, clearly embarrassed by his rudeness, but Azure was unimpressed by his attempt.

“It’s been weeks since you’ve left this room. You need to spend time on something else other than your alchemy”.

“But I’m so CLOSE to a breakthrough! I know it!”

“That’s what you said last time, and the only thing that’s changed since then is the number of flasks in this room.”

Their arguing caused some of the delicate glassware to shake, and Zephyr rushed to stabilize them with his claws.

Azure squinted at the flimsy desks supporting the set-up. It was almost astonishing that they were ever able to hold that much weight.
“You didn’t even bother making a firmer foundation? You studied engineering! I’ve seen you build things much more impressive than a plank on sticks!”

“I-I didn’t have time to-”

“You didn’t have time for your own SAFETY?!”

Zephyr’s shaking caused a flask to collapse. In his panic, he let go of the rest of the glassware he was holding and the whole thing toppled over, smashing on the floor and falling into the pot. The brew bubbled and hissed and boiled over, glowing mysterious colors unlike any seen on Sornieth. Azure barely had time to push Zephyr away before...

BOOM

Azure tried to regain her senses in the wake of the explosion. Her eyes had some sort of goop covering them, and her typically keen antennae were going completely haywire. Her whole body ached and burned with agony.

“Are you-,” Zephyr was cut off as Azure dashed out of the burrow, and leaped into a nearby lake to wash off the goo. She managed to get the goop off her eyes and most of her body, but there was still something glowing on her feathers. She tried to scrub it off, but only managed to pluck out a few feathers. Glowing feathers. She carefully felt the feathers. There wasn’t anything stuck to the feather. It was a part of the feather. She looked at her reflection in the water… glowing like those rocks and the flasks in the burrow. In a rage, Azure breathed an unusually powerful blast of arcane magic at her reflection.

She watched as it caused waves and ripples throughout the pond. She stared at them, trying to calm down.
She took a ragged breath through her lungs.
