KarinorXXXXXXXXXXXXXXGuild Deputy
A Day in the Office

“You’re sure that everything will be alright? You won’t need anything?” The blue-green Skydancer looked concerned, watching as Karinor made his way into her office.

“We’ll be fine! You really need a break, and what kinda Deputy would I be if I didn’t take some of the workload?” The large brown Guardian grinned, lightly patting his smaller companion on her back. Aria relaxed, letting her head feathers down. The Guildmaster had hardly rested since it was established, and Karinor was determined to give her a vacation one way or another. She completed packing, and turned to leave.

“Remember to check the documents in the left drawer, and the meeting schedule on the board, and the-” The Skydancer was cut off as Karinor got up to guide her out the door. He loved Aria, but she really was a workaholic sometimes. She chuckled, and waved her friend goodbye, before leaving on her day off. Karinor reclined at his temporary desk. Surely managing the Guild for a day would be a piece of cake!

He decided to start with those documents Aria mentioned. He gently tugged on the cabinet door, but it refused to budge, seemingly stuck on the inside. Furrowing his brow, the Guardian pulled with great force, sending the drawer, and the stack of documents inside, hurtling to a corner. He was shocked, staring at the huge number of papers scattered on the floor. No matter, he’d just collect them up and look through them one by one. The Guardian stretched, and bent to retrieve the scattered papers. All of them had long paragraphs of written text. ‘Diplomacy’ here, ‘inventory’ there, and something about a Wind council? His head swam with the extremely dense pages. Karinor shrugged, and lumped them all into a pile to sign individually later. That couldn’t go wrong.

It took about an hour or so, but he eventually had all of them. The pile was huge, almost as large as himself. It was intimidating, but Karinor couldn’t back down. A warrior like himself would never back down! Letting out a determined warcry, he yanked a stack of papers off the top, and began to sign them as fast as he could. Sure, there were a few claw holes in them now, and maybe he broke a quill or two, but at least he was working at a fast clip.

He got about a quarter through before he was snapped out of his signing spree by an insistent knocking. He scrambled out of his seat, cursing about the neglected meeting schedule. As he opened the door, a tiny dark blue fae rushed in, carrying papers and blueprints much larger than he was.

“Deputy Karinor, pleasure to see you! Do you know where the Guildmaster is? I have something of utmost importance to show her!” He chirped. Karinor rubbed his eyes to focus on his guest. It was Horaniel, one of the newer recruits. Maybe he just had questions or something, he could quickly answer him and get back to work.

“Well, Aria’s on vacation for today, so I’m in charge. Maybe I can help?” Karinor pulled up a tiny stool, more appropriate for the young Fae’s size. Immediately, the Fae lept on, and pulled out a tiny square paper from his pocket. He proceeded to unfold it. It became larger and larger, much bigger than it had any right to be. Every square inch of it was covered in some kind of annotation or diagram, scribbled in incomprehensible shorthand. Karinor began to sweat, as he observed the absurdity before him. Satisfied with his presentation aide, Horaniel taped it up. It obscured the entire opposite wall. Karinor silently gulped. The Fae cleared his throat and began to speak.

“Right, so this is my strategy to increase the efficiency of our logistical transports. Firstly, we need about 30 litres of lubricant oil, 10 kilograms of carrots, and a carnival clown... ” He groaned internally. This was going to be a long day.

“...and that’s when we recruit the elephants and bring them through the Icefields for a surprise attack! If that doesn’t work, don’t worry, I’ve got another contingency... ” It felt like an eternity, the tiny Fae rattling on about fractional efficiencies and some… interesting ways to increase it. Karinor’s head swam, trying to follow his logic, and logistical systems he didn’t understand. How borrowing several siege engines for would work to make deliveries faster was beyond him. Why didn’t he just ask for fighting tips or something? That would’ve been much easier. Eventually, Karinor’s patience ran out. He raised a claw, and motioned for Horaniel to pause. Mercifully, the Fae obliged, the torrent of information abating.

“Something wrong? I know, it’s a rough draft, so any queries are welcome. Is it about Sub-section 34a? That part was stubborn to plan.” Karinor took a deep breath. Horaniel was young, and he didn’t want to discourage him, as crazy as he sounded. Taking a moment to think, he answered.

“...Look, I’m not the best at this planning stuff, but your ideas have some potential. Why don’t you try using them, but smaller? Find out what works and what doesn’t work. Then you make a new plan and improve it.” Horaniel lept in excitement, jumping on Karinor’s desk.

“Fantastic! I’m honored to have your support Deputy, I will get to testing it posthaste!” He flew around excitedly, talking to himself about what pie in the sky goals his genius stratagem would achieve. He grabbed his elaborate diagram, and headed out. Karinor simply breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe he could get on with the rest of the work.

Unfortunately for the poor Guardian, he scarcely got through more signing before another guest came in. And another, and another. Soon it was a flood of queries, mission reports and complaints.

“The neighbors saw some beastclans lurking around. Should we send a battalion?”

“Where are the maps?”

“Someone stole my sweetroll!”

“Where did the oil supply go?”

Karinor was done. He couldn’t take another inane complaint or unreasonable demand. He sighed in frustration. On top of all that, either he was hallucinating, or the papers in the back multiplied while his back was turned. He swore he could hear them laughing at him. There was another knock on the door. Karinor shouted in frustration, cracking the table as he stormed over.

“For the Windsinger’s sake, what do you want?!” Karinor yelled. There was a moment of silence, Karinor panting heavily before he looked down and saw who it was. Standing before him was a familiar blue-green Skydancer. Immediately, he faltered, his face pink with embarrassment. Aria appeared much more relaxed, calm and collected. She pursed her lips, peeking at the messy office behind him. Aria gave him a sympathetic look, before making her way inside. Karinor stood frozen at the doorway, unsure whether to apologise, or leave.

“Rough day?” She asked carefully, helping to reorganize the scattered office. Karinor sighed, and turned to help.

“Yeah. Remind me never to complain about my job ever again.”
