A Tale of Lives Saved

I watch the ships that sail above me, their sails unfurled in the favoring winds. They dart to and fro, sailing from port to port as time passes by. I see lines dangling over some of the bows, shimmering hooks glimmering on their tips. I know what they’re for, and I don’t fall to them like the fish around me. Not even when I hear cheers from one of the ships do I stir, for I know my role, and it is not meant for them.

I see a familiar bow approach the channel. The head is one I won’t forget; a Pearlcatcher Maiden clutching a broken pearl. The Blood Pearl has entered the harbor, and it is impossible for me to miss the massive form that swims beneath it. A Leviathan, unlike her brethren, guards the ship, and I do not disturb her. She guides it with the wind towards one of the ports, and I cannot help but stare after her. She is normally alone, and yet I see a smaller Leviathan swimming in her wake, fins spread and eyes wide as he follows her. Perhaps he is related to her, though I doubt it. He looks much more like the Leviathans found in the darker waters of the Trench, but his eyes reveal that he is imbued with the magic of the Isles.

He, however, is causing no harm, and the Guardian of the Blood Pearl seems to have accepted him, so I turn back to my watch. It is then that I catch it. Another ship has entered the harbor, and the winds have turned on them. I watch it turn into the shallows, scraping the sharper pillars of stone that line the entrance to the cove. I normally wouldn’t pay it any mind, but this ship is also familiar to me. The golden gilt along the bow, the fearsome head of a screeching Gaoler extending from the mast at the head of the ship, all of it is too distinct for me to ignore. The two ships behind it are just as familiar, with a Silver Roc and a rather composed Kelpie guiding them across the great blue, but this ship is what has imprinted itself into my memory as one of the four. It is the Gilded Tempest, and I can now see it is not the wind that has led them astray, but a creature of the deep like myself. I see her pushing the ship into the pointed stones, the Maw of the Tides, and I make my decision.

I launch myself at the Leviathan, dragging her off of the ship. It doesn’t take long for the small Leviathan with dear Winter to come to my aid, letting out a screech of his own. He holds the monster down as I turn to the Tempest, nudging it away from the stones. As it leaves, I see something floating in the water. I recognize it as a dragon almost immediately, and I approach her slowly. I nudge the Spiral, my dark eyes gleaming in the light of the sun flickering on the surface of the waves above, and for a moment I believe she has been lost. Then she moves. I hesitate for a moment, then decide to do what my forefathers never dared to do.

I take this Spiral captain with a belly of gold, and I breach the surface of the waves with her resting atop my snout.

I have taken fallen warriors to their graves for too long. It is high time I started helping them.

The fishermen that day had a new tale to tell, that of the Leviathan who came from the abyss to save a ship from the Maw of the Tides. They say I am the first of my kind, and in a way, they are right. I am the first Leviathan of the Abyss to reveal myself to the world above, and certainly the first to break the rules of the Abyss to do so.

Something tells me I will not be the last.
