A lone figure emerges from the darkness. Whispers spread among the others as they cast him wary glances, and fall silent as he moves calmly past them. Their eyes follow him but he pays them no heed. They are not his concern, not not his focus. The entirety of the small village was aware of the strangers presence in the matter of minutes and soon all of the residents were out of their homes to watch him at a safe distance. He carries himself with such calmness, such grace, and yet there was an air about him that reeks of danger. None of them got too close, in fear of making him angry. It was as if he was unaware of the village and those trailing behind him. Some thought he may be in a trance, others thought he was sleepwalking, but as he nears the edge of the village he pauses. For a few long moments he stands there, hair gently swaying in the breeze, before turning his head and looking down at a young one who had wandered a bit too close. An uneasy silence sweeps over the town as the villagers waits with baited breath to see what fate would befall the child. "Can I be like you?" The child asks, gazing up at the stranger, unafraid. "Can you be brave?" The stranger replies, voice gravelly and deep yet pleasing to the ears. It suits him. "I think so." The stranger merely smiles and keeps on his way. Soon he leaves the light of the village and fades off into the darkness, just as he had come. One of the elders speaks up, voice hoarse with age. "Those who walk in darkness can never rest. They have seen too much." |
