Opp's Notes:
This drone is kept hidden away, and for a very good reason: It's got all the code required to be a backup consciousness. One could be forgiven for thinking it's related to the consciousness. They've got the same colored carapace and some opal pockets, but that's where the similarities end. The backup is from Shadow while the consciousness hails from Arcane. The backup was also biologically male before conversion, has a body-to-wing ratio that favors the wings, and its opal pockets blend in better with the carapace. In a way, it's more perfect than what the hive sees as perfection. It remains dormant for most of the day except for a brief period where the databank transfers a copy of the hive's collective knowledge, ensuing that it won't inadvertently interfere with operations.

Thought experiment: if a consciousness' original body is destroyed and a backup is loaded, does it still count as the original consciousness?

There were several questions the Consciousnesses had. Questions that should not have had to been thought of.

Where did these dragons with no arms come from? How could they be so familiar and yet so different from previous examples? And most importantly:

Why wouldn't they assimilate properly?

This small one was no exception. It acted as a drone should, but it never grew in chitin plates when it was assimilated. Its hardened hide had strange, marblelike patterns swooping across it, in defiance of established logic. General consensus on the primary wavelength was that all of these 'Banescale' had this happen upon assimilation, though some hives reported that their hides reached completion apart from a failure to segment.

There was more. Banescale drones could only successfully reproduce with drones of the same derivative. Initial reports matched up with preestablished information on the 'Gaoler' line, but later experimentation had proven that Gaoler and Banescale drones were biologically distinct from other drones - and each other.

It had been - a "disappointment", as the dragons would put it - that their near instant success with the Gaolers couldn't be reproduced with the Banescale. Yet there was an air of confidence on the subject matter; given enough time, their increased genetic diversity would produce a solution and the initial embarrassment could be put behind them.

It amused the Fuchsia Consciousness greatly to imagine the frustration some of their more devout counterparts were going through, dealing with drones that would not conform to a unified aesthetic.
