Shifting Expanse | True Neutral / Neutral Good | Merchant Clan

Dust Bleak is located on a precipice of the Carrion Canyon, it over looks the hundreds of feet of sheer cliff sides and rock below, and guards a single passage way in and out of the Canyon for hundreds of miles. The clanfolk are tough and cautious, but not unfriendly. Their clan's way of life demands them to be on guard, and the guards are merciless should a smuggler or merchant try to steal, kill or sneak something too unsavory through the gates of the clan. The clan also serves as a secluded and remote waypoint for many rebels caught up in the Magmablood Rebellion as well as the current uprising in the Expanse. Home to a handful of highly knowledgable canyon navigators, it gives the rebels an edge over unchaperoned travelers in the Canyon. Should you find yourself lingering in the clan long enough to get to know the folk here, you may not want to leave. The strangeness of their lives and struggles has bonded them together in a way not much else could.

» Origins «

Dust Bleak was settled only a few generations ago by Aleem and a few of his traveling companions. The bones of an old town built precariously close to the rim of the Carrion Canyon had caught his eye and piqued his curiosity. It wasn't uncommon for towns to spring up and vanish quickly in the Expanse, but for one to be located so near the edge of the canyon, a place few dragons dared to venture let alone live near, was too odd not to investigate.

They discovered a fresh water spring and small cave system below the clan and along the interior of the canyon wall, some of which still contained the belongings of a clan long gone. Given the age of Aleem and his best friend Noveny, they decided to end their travels and settled down. They were aging after all, and needed rest now. The Skydancer had a keen sense for danger and sensed no ill energy in the abandoned town, just a sense that it was still alive somehow. As they began rebuilding the clan more dragons joined their ranks from merchant caravans, as wanderers or rescues, some just out of curiosity about the canyon rim clan. Over time Dust Bleak grew to be a decent sized clan of merchants, traders, artisans and mechanics. They became an out of the way but good pit stop for the weary traveler. However their growing reputation as a watering hole in the wastelands would soon change when a new breed of wanderer decided settle in as well.

It was the second monsoon after Dust Bleak was founded that she arrived. She'd been spotted climbing out of the canyon, drenched from the warm, fleeting rains. She took shelter in the Dusty Den Tavern for a drink. The whole place was hushed as Dopson shakily poured her a mug of mead. She drank deeply and surveyed the room before she spoke, her six electric blue eyes blinked slowly at the silent dragons.

"Kadre welcomes you." Her voice was deep and gravelly, like a contorted growl, but over all not unfriendly sounding.

The clanmates cautiously made a toast to break tension, and after a period of awkward stares and questions became a trusted member of the clan. Although she was certainly not fully dragon, no one questioned her too much on her bloodline. This became both clearer, and more confusing as she began bringing more friends out of the canyon lands.

It didn't take long before Dust Bleak had a good population of strangers who came from the canyon, some dragon, some certainly something else. But the strange arrivals opened up another business for the clan: the canyon guides. For the right price, Kadre or one of the Others, would lead you safely through the canyon. Fail to pay or follow the rules and they would leave you to whatever fate the mysteries of the canyon decided. More smugglers and criminals began coming to Dust Bleak, looking for hard to follow passage for their illegal goods.

And like that, Dust Bleak went from watering hole to a smugglers waypoint.
