B I O G R A P H Y

An old friend of Okiko's reached out to her for help. A small dragon hatchling had been left with him, augmented with unknown magics that he could not break. She could not use her own magic, but released it in uncontrolled bursts either when she had a tantrum or when it built up to the point that she could no longer hold it. She had been made to be a weapon, one that could be fired off again and again wherever she went. Okiko wasn't sure how she could help, but she immediately took pity on the girl and took her in to see if there was a way to undo what had been done to her.

Vanyel didn't remember her parents or even what it was like to be loved by the time Okiko found her, but she soon learned again under the care of the champion. Her destructive tantrums affected Okiko slightly less than others due to her being magically Dead, and with Aster's clever contraption she was able to release the pent-up energy in a less explosive way. Still, even with the work of the most capable and talented mages in the clan, no one has been able to undo all of what the unknown perpetrator has done to Vanyel's soul.

All it would take is for her apparatus to fail or for her to somehow build up far too much magic for it to siphon away very quickly for her to level half of the clan. Despite this, Vanyel is adored by Okiko, who's become like a mother to her. As she gets older, Vanyel realizes more and more just how dangerous she is and how much is riding on her mother curing her curious condition. She is now terrified of letting loose, and is desperate to find a way to keep her magic from destroying everything around her. She swears to find out who made her a weapon and to destroy them, by the same power they forced upon her if at all possible.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

When she first arrived, she barely knew how to speak aside from grunts, screams and shrieks. Laughter used to frighten her until she learned to do it herself. She is still quiet, her vocabulary limited, but she is very vocal about how she feels. She will growl loudly and bristle all over when angry, and when she is frightened she will cower and hide behind someone she trusts (usually her mother Okiko). When happy, Vanyel will chirp and trill and may even wag her tail, even when she is too shy to approach the one who made her so.

Vanyel is skittish and shy, and she will not allow strangers to get close without someone she trusts by her side. That list is very small, but she and Okiko are working to expand it. Thus far she has become comfortable around the Queen, Aster, Copernicus and his family, and Princess Nimue. Curiously, Vanyel was drawn to Nimue at once, needing no help getting to know her and greeting her like a friend. Not even she knows why this was. Those who try to interact with her despite her fear may trigger an outburst, which even with her inhibiting apparatus is enough to stun all within a hundred foot radius. This is usually unintentional but gives her ample time to escape.

In private Vanyel is fond of dressing up and looking pretty as well as creating pretty works of art. She likes to paint, sculpt, sketch and craft, as well as repair broken knick-knacks. She will give the products out to friends or keep them herself, decorating the home she shares with Okiko with art made in many mediums. She very rarely takes requests, so having her heed yours is a high honor indeed. The only one she often asks for direction from is her mother, though she has been known to gently prod close friends for an idea of what they might like from her.
