SURIA
desert explorer
49631838.png
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

[ Lore ]

The desert sprawls out lazily before Suria as she glides upon a warm updraft. She sees it for what it is; a beautiful and unforgiving creature, a tanned expanse of hot sand. Cacti are few and far between, offering their paltry shade to small insects who seek refuge from the sun. Despite this, she is at ease; her preparations are as meticulous as always. Water, provisions, healing potions, and other medical necessities are strapped to her back; more is available at her carefully selected campsite.

The Luminescent is a relatively small desert, made smaller still in recent years by the advance of industrialization. The city has tamed it somewhat; what once was a leopard is now a housecat, softly purring under her clawtips. Soft and familiar. It is not the most exciting place, but it still holds secrets; the filaments of desiccated plants, the movement of a sand spider, the graceful patterns made by vultures in the air.

She has a special fondness for the trinkets it gives away; ripe dates from a crumbling oasis, the shed skin of a buttersnake, hardy little flowers cuttings which flourish back in the mild climate of her apartment. In any case, she will not be the next poor lost soul who drowns in sand - she is far too careful to end up as a pile of bleached bones to be buried and uncovered and reburied by the shifting sands.

She has never found a dragon's body and hopes that she never will.

The sky is an unbroken sheet of lapis, the sun an unruffled pinpoint of white behind her. It's hot now, but at night, it will drop to below freezing, will transform into a dusky liminal space, wreathe itself in sulky shades of bluish-grey. The desert foxes will come out of their burrows to hunt.

In past years, she's taken her savings and journeyed to more exotic deserts; they had all been beautiful. Purple crystal plateaus with terrain so sharp that you couldn't land. The ashy plains of the Shifting Expanse, crackling with electricity. The pearly white sands of Wind interspersed with boulders of snow jade and clumps of bamboo. Even the edges of the Abiding Boneyard, littered with rotting flora and gnarled fauna, had its own unique beauty about it.

She lands near a patch of fruiting cacti and sits in its shade as she plucks and peels the fruit. The flesh is not as lush as its domesticated cousins plumped up with aquaponics and nutrient paste, but it is a welcome taste of refreshment. Another gift. She scoops up a handful of fine Luminescent sand, lets it trickle through her claws, contemplating the morning. The desert does not stay still for long; indeed, the landscape changes on a whim.

No dragon could harness a desert, but she worries. She worries about the City and its creeping jaws, worries for the pieces it has already consumed. There is little that she can do.

She dusts off her wings and returns to the air.

[ Notes ]

• Works as a part-time messenger in the "suburbia" of Deux district, earns just enough to fund her day-trips and overnight camping in the nearby Luminescent Desert

• Top 3 above you: x

-Suria-

• She chooses not to remember her parent's names. Although they may have loved her once, she considers herself dead to them and them dead to her. Family is complicated, man.

• A massive fan of the desert, she spends a lot of her time flying over the shifting dunes and keeping an eye on the beastclan movements across the sands. Sometimes a scuffle with a roc will break out, and she definitely has a few scars from close calls.

• She has a collection of pressed flowers that she adds to every time she finds a new plant. She's also been known to refer to plants by their scientific names in the worst scenarios, such as "I'm going to go get a few Fragaria ananassa, would anyone like some?"
