LEILIANAN

SERENE | FEY | INDEPENDENT

When the Fletching Clan was finally at peace after the brutal clan war, its numbers had dwindled significantly. The first dragons to begin replenishing the empty chambers of the palace were Sangria and Confetti, followed quickly by a strange fey skydancer with no name.

The dragon's coat was as pale green as their eyes, which seemed to possess always an otherworldly calm, and they spoke very little. They emerged in the clan one day without warning, as though they had always been there, and nobody knew quite what to think of them. They never stirred trouble, and always bowed their head in deference to the Queen even though no-one could ever recall telling them who she was. Sometimes they brought bundles of strange herbs for cooking or medicine, and left them outside the dens of the dragons who would use them.

One day, at last recovered from her many days in the infirmary after the battles, the clan's sentry spotted the strange skydancer and watched them from her airborne perch. After eating nothing at dinner, the dragon made their way slowly to the north. They followed no particular path, but they approached the thick bamboo grove and then... disappeared. Sidhe blinked in surprise and then squinted at the spot where she had seen the skydancer. There was no trace of them.

The next morning, she watched for them. They appeared, shaking dew from their mane, in the same place where they had left the night previous, and once again they did not seem to push aside the bamboo so much as simply materialize in front of it. Sidhe was no small dragon, but she knew that even a fae would have difficulty maneuvering within between the stiff poles of bamboo.

That night, she ventured to follow them stealthily. She was quiet herself, and though large she could stalk silently, so she waited behind a tower of the castle until she saw them walking through the tall billowing grass. She ducked her head and padded after them, quiet as can be.

Just before the dragon reached the edge of the grove, they stopped. Settling back on their paws, they twisted their head around and said pleasantly, "I've nothing to hide. You may come with me if you wish."

Sidhe jumped back and made to bare her teeth before staring in surprise. They smiled gently at her, head cocked to the side as they waited for a response. How had they known what she had been planning? She glanced back at the palace and then to them, and wished she had Sif's sense for good and evil intent in dragons.

"I won't harm you," laughed the skydancer, and Sidhe thought she heard it echo gently in the reeds behind them. Again she stared, but curiosity overcame her and she took a few tentative steps after them. They turned, their tail swishing through the grass as they did, and stepped into the bamboo. Sidhe glared in frustration; she could never follow them there. She took a few more paces forward and made to press her face between the stalks and look after them, but as she did, suddenly the world shifted and in a dizzying moment Sidhe found herself in an airy grove.

The skydancer was just ahead of her, making their way to where a pavilion rose from a pool of still, sparkling water.

"What is this place?" asked Sidhe. The skydancer looked at her and smiled.

"I'd never heard you speak," they said softly. "It's lovely."

They looked back at the pond. "This is a fairy grove."

Sidhe sat back on her haunches, looking around and trying to make herself believe that she wasn't dreaming. Now that she looked closer, she realized that the shimmering of the water was actually the light of tiny pixies skating just above the surface. Here and there more tiny fairies flitted about the grove like blue and green fireflies.

"You live here?"

The skydancer nestled in the long grass. "As such," they responded. "I call this place my home. I've known little else."

Sidhe watched a fairy sitting on one of the delicate stepping stones leading to the pavilion as he dangled his feet over the edge, letting his feet make minute splashes in the water.

"Why did you come to the Fletching Clan, then?"

The skydancer looked serenely at her. "I sensed that it was a safe place now, and that I was somehow needed. I've yet to discover quite how, but I'm certain I will."

As they watched her, jade eyes peaceful and smiling, a thought--a mischievous little thing, too--came up in the back of Sidhe's mind that perhaps she was part of the reason this skydancer had been called to her clan.
