Biography

Crepuscule is doing important research. He’s trying to bend the rules of reality, rewrite the laws of magic. So far, his work is composed of theories, hypotheses, and failed experiments.

See, he’s a nature dragon... but he’s devoted his life to his desire to cast fireball.

Excerpts from research journal, as written by Crepuscule:

Day 1
I am finally beginning my journey of magic and discovery. All my life I’ve been told that where I was born determined who I will be for the rest of my life, but I say nay! I must defy what is called natural and become who I wish, who I feel I need to become. Today I will begin my foray into the magic of fire as opposed to the magic of nature.

Day 2
I have progressed very little. To be honest, I have not progressed at all. I have lit fires in my home to kindle my connection to this most noble of elements, until I can make the move to the Ashfall Waste. My attempts to influence the fire merely caused my workbench to sprout leaves.

Day 5
No progress as of yet. The books discussing fire magic I had ordered came today, surely they can shed light into the matter.

Day 23
I have run out of candles and lamp oil. No progress.

Day 45
Truly, candlemaking has helped me understand fire on a more personal level. A flame on a wick, though not borne of any internal flame of mine, is my own creation. I have created it, though struck with flint, with my own power and will. I have fed and nurtured it with tallow and stearin, and without me it would fade away and disappear. Though it pains me to face my inability to call forth flames from thin air with nothing but my breath and will, I fear I must admit defeat. But I will not give up on my hopes. I will not lay aside my staff or put down my pointed hat. I will become the master of fire one day, and I will leave no path untrodden until I find the one that will take me to my destination.

Day 47
I bought a new fragrance today. Perhaps my next attempt at scented candles will turn out better.

Day 58
I have begun theoretical work on achieving bursts of flames through the magic of nature. During this I have realized my quarters are quite flammable, and in time I shall find a location more suitable for empiric experimentation.

Day 61
The magic of nature, while unable to produce flame in itself, can be used to create a suitable environment for flame. There are plants that can be stimulated with the magic of nature that naturally produce flammable oils, for example. I believe this avenue of study will prove more fruitful.

Day 67
Today I began experiments in the forgotten hall of stone. From my candle flame I produced a large uncontrollable explosion with a burst of flammable spores. The experiment was technically a success, but it needs refinement. I underestimated the power of fire and in the haste my mane caught fire. I managed to put it out before I was severely burned but my hair is unsalvageable. I must take more precautions in the future.

Day 72
I gained no new burns today. Wearing a wet hat proved successful in this regard, though it droops without dignity. My aim and precision have grown better as well; with near simultaneous combustion I can create a streak of flame that a laydragon might mistake for genuine magic of flame. It is not what I imagined when I began this journey of magic and discovery, but to wield flame through magical means- it is, after all, what I set out to do.

Day 80
My hat caught fire today. I will look to purchase a new one tomorrow, but perhaps I will lay it aside during my practice.

Day 93
I have finally acquired a sapling of “burning bush”. In part it upsets me that it comes back to horticulture, but in part I am excited what new avenues if experimentation my acquisition will open.

Day 136
My chemistry teacher claims that I am mad and going against natural order, but she seems intrigued by my goals and achievement nonetheless. She keeps enthusiastically saying that if my experiments with oils and accelerants do not work out, I could have a fruitful career as an alchemist. I think she is trying to convert me.

Day 140
Oils and accelerants, though superior in their flammability and reliability, are far more difficult to handle and control than flammable spores, pods, and vines. During what I thought was a standard experiment I lost complete control of my substances and though luckily my writing hand was spared, my other was not. I must cease my foray until further notice, but in the meantime, I am left to reflect- it is not enough to create and guide fire where you wish it to go. To see the flames of your own creation to dance and whisper is a marvel, but it is not control. To truly control the magic of fire is to not merely guide the flame, it is to order it and demand of it, and it is to mercilessly quench it should it disobey. The fire does not learn; it will not kindly avoid burning you the second time, no kind words can move it. In the haste to fulfill my own dreams, I misunderstood and ignored the most basic nature of fire, and I have certainly paid for it. I will try again, in time, once I am healed.
