Biography
Outpost Cook ~ Saloon Cook
Joined Clan late March/early April 2019 from Clan VESTAIS, #68148
- 11th member of the Outpost
Abalendu just stumbled into the clan one day, not really expected, but welcomed and warmed up so he could tell his story.
His parents were Labyrinth Law Enforcement - he wasn't too keen on joining the family business so decided to explore Sornieth. One thing led to another, and he got dropped off on the shores of the Southern Icefields.
Clan leaders decided that he had to be pretty tough to survive without the proper gear and decided to give him an apprenticeship with Chess, so the Ridgeback could learn a trade. After passing Chess's high standards, Abalendu was sent off to The Outpost to keep the residents there well fed. He preferred the setting more - it was wilder and not as regimented as living in the main clan. It was an adventure without being quite as risky as the one that landed him on the shores of the icefields in the first place.
Although he does tend to sneak bites of food, he generally doesn't do any real harm, despite his ridgeback tendencies. For some reason, the cold doesn't really bother him at all. No one can figure out why.
Clan leaders are still a little dumbfounded that they ended up with as many Nature dragons as Ice dragons at The Outpost, especially since Nature dragons are sorely outnumbered in the main clan. Perhaps because conditions aren't as harsh out there, the Nature dragons were more comfortable.
He occasionally joined the ship's crew on their journeys, but often prepped meals ahead of time and sent them on the ship instead.

Abalendu looked over the ingredients happily. This was exactly up his wheelhouse! He was a cook at the clan's new Outpost and often had to prepare food for long sea voyages for the clan's ship that docked there, sometimes joining them. (This was why Chess had selected him as today's representative before the Imperial headed off to enjoy some of the festival's other activities - and perhaps source a rare Wind ingredient or two to take home.)
He went off to the pantry to form a strategy, but was distracted immediately when he remembered there was a treasure hunt going on as well. "Arrrr, where be the treasure?" thought Abalendu, chuckling to himself. He poked around the kitchen, searching the pots and pans and new fangled Lightning gadgets, before reluctantly heading over to the herbs to start his cook.

Normally Abalendu would use dried herbs for the sea voyages, but the use of the fresh herbs here would brighten up the required ingredients considerably if he could find the perfect one. He briefly considered the bloody snapdragon, given how well it held up, but it wasn't really tasty enough to include (and he had gotten a rather large amount of complaints about it whenever he tried). Finally, he picked out a blood spath, for both it's color and taste.
Taste, taste, taste - that was the most important thing here! Not just space or storage considerations. These ingredients would need a lot of help.
First things first, Abalendu soaked the dried fish and salted meat to draw out as much salt as possible. Despite his initial plan to use fresh herbs, the Ridgeback couldn't resist using the rub in his herb pouch on the meat (after patting it down carefully to get it dry again). He then did a nice sear on it on the grill and tented the meat with foil while he made the sauce.
Abalendu melted the dried fish - yes, they melted away when heated! - in some butter, along with the blood spath for flavor. He added some sliced ancient mushrooms and gradishes to the sauce and poured over the seared meat, which was served in his leatherback sea turtle bowl for added flair. As a final touch, he chopped up the winter ration and toasted in the broiler before sprinkling over the dish. Not too bad for a first day of competition!
