Foolish Oracle
Born to the Sea of a Thousand Currents, Detritus was once revered for his abilities as an oracle among his own kind. His visions were clear and modern, allowing him to give accurate results when he was asked. But the only ones who could ask and get a real answer from him were his own kind. Only true devote followers of the Tidelord were allowed to hear the real truth. It was common for all oracles to play with outsiders, though, to give them fake answers, to string them along. It's just what they do, it was who they were, and for a long time, Detritus enjoyed it. Then he grew bored with the games they played on the outsiders, bored of the lies. He felt he was worth more than the lies, his abilities far surpassed what they offered the outsiders, and so he decided he wanted to offer something else, instead, for a price that should have been worth his abilities. He offered to tell those who could pay his exorbitant fees what it was they wished to know, and he did tell them. Though he spoke in cryptic riddles, what he told them was exactly what he'd been able to divine, and for that, he was ostracized from the Sea. There was a reason they didn't tell the outsiders the whole truth, it wasn't just to be petty, to be secretive. It was dangerous to tell them what they wanted to know. They did not take crossing this line lightly. No longer allowed to enter the mystical waters, Detritus' powers diminished to almost nothing, and what he could see was useless to him. His fame faded and he was considered a has-been, no longer worthy of attention. Years later, only a portion of what he'd once been, bedraggled, his bright plumage faded and limp, he came across a dragon who had once sought his Sight and asked him a question of the future. Because of his answer, as honest as it was cryptic, she found the courage to seek her fortune in the depths of the Cairnstone Rest. With Detritus' promising foretelling of gems, the dragon was not expecting to find what she was looking for at the cost of a curse that slowly turned her to stone. After explaining her situation to Detritus, she told him she did not blame him for her predicament, only lamented her own greed and willingness to believe his divination came at such a low cost. Only a fraction of what he once was, Detritus swore off his abilities for good, making a promise to that dragon he would never lead another to a fate such as hers. He stayed with her for the remaining months it took for her to turn completely to stone, and then he wandered the world without purpose until he settled in the Wasteland, close enough to the Sea to remind himself of his mistakes, but far enough not to risk the temptation. He carves bone for the lair, because he grew up carving seashells as most Sea-dwellers did.
