xuefeng
xue

Known as Xuefeng or Xue to those who are close to her, she is an incredibly disciplined and strong fighter and caster. She teaches at the Bing Monastery, passing on the knowledge to generations of future pupils. No one knows her true age but her appearance rarely seems to change at all, even with her magpie abilities. While not shy, she does not speak up often, preferring to teach in total silence.

When out of class she can be found tending to the monastery garden, pruning and weeding to prepare for another winter of beautiful blooming plants. Her magic is distinct with a silver aura and the very gentle smell of evergreens and fresh fallen snow. While capable of using her magic offensively, Xue prefers to use it as a defensive measure, seeing it as only an asset to compliment her technique.

Little is known about Xuefeng's past life before she was sent to the monastery for training and eventually moved up the ranks, however teachers and students alike know better than to pry into her secrets. While she may stay cold and distant, especially during classes, she feels a responsibility to her students to train them to the best of her ability. Very few know about why she was originally sent to Xuelan, and even less about the fate of her late mother.

The truth is that when she was just a child her adoptive father was murdered by a group of rogue crows that had taken great pleasure in carefully dismembering his body and leaving the remains as a final gift towards the Jackdaw who had brought her up from a hatchling. The shock and horror from this brutal slaying was enough to send Xuefeng away to one of the larger clans in the hope that this transfer would keep her safe. Barely a year later did she receive the news that a local defense force had reported the corpse of a Jackdaw that fitted the description of her mother. Devastated at the loss of guardians to return home to, Xuefeng expressed her grief through the form of a increased diligence to her training and studies.

---

The soft falling of silver tinged snow so unique to this region is the only movement visible in the otherwise still monastery. Large windows let in the little light there is in the dying daylight, reflected off the gleaming blanket that quiets the lands. Hidden deep underneath the monastery is a tunnel leading outside, where a magpie sits quietly deep in thought. Clutched in her claws is a small old sackdoll, the one last memory of her mother before she past.

"What are you doing down here?"

The voice startles Xuefeng as she whirls around to stare at the intruder. Glossy grey feathers and a piercing gaze meet her own before she relaxes again, recognizing her mentor. Xue takes a long breath, looking out to the falling snow before answering the question.

"I needed a place to think..."

The soft rustling of feathers is the only sound that discloses the movement of Shuang gently settling next to her. There is a silence that lies between them, but it is a silence of peace and understanding.

It is very late at night before Xue is ready to speak again. The falling of snow has escalated into a blizzard underneath the moon's watchful gaze. Very slowly and deliberately, Xuefeng turns her head to look at her mentor with his head bowed down in deep thought, only to find that his eyes have fluttered shut in sleep. She sighs softly, a sound only heard by the darkness of night before drifting off into a dreamless sleep.

The room was silent. The students rest at ease. Teachers were away in their studies, and yet, something was off. A sliver of scented smoke drifted lazily across the room, and it sent her on edge. The fragrance, something with just a hint of sweetness beneath the smoke. A figure landed silently behind her, and as she turned to fight, everything went dark...
