When Mihiyo was first born, her blank white eyes caused her clanmates to recoil from her in shock and dismay. The last hatchling of a late clutch, born in the dimming of twilight, her entrance into the world was shrouded in a sense of foreboding - in her clanmates' eyes, her unnatural gaze was but an outward marker of the strange time in which she had been born. Fearing that she had been born blind, her parents at first tried to confine her to the nest to prevent her from coming into conflict with the world outside the lair. However, Mihiyo is not blind - in fact, she sees more than most dragons could ever dream of.

From an early age, Mihiyo has been able to commune with the many wandering spirits that roam the domains of the elemental gods. In her youth, she spent time listening to their stories of far-away lands and of the many secrets of the world, storing all the information away in her excellent memory. With this knowledge, Mihiyo rose quickly through the clan's ranks until she became a trusted shaman and healer, and an advisor to the clan's leaders.

All was well until, from the spirits, Mihiyo learned the wrong secret - a plot to overthrow the leaders of the clan. When she warned her clanmates about the plot, they were horrified by her ability to commune with the spirits. Fearing that she would learn of their own private secrets and use them against the clan, her clanmates voted to exile her and refused to listen to the leaders' pleas for reason. Mihiyo, however, accepted the judgment with a grace that surprised the dragons around her, for in her ear the spirits were whispering that her destiny was far greater than that of a simple Wind clan shaman. They instructed her to travel far and wide, communing with the spirits of nature and learning how to use her gifts to their fullest.

It was on these travels that Mihiyo began to form close bonds with some of the spirits around her. One of them in particular, a Frostbite Hummingbird, formed such a close association that Mihiyo began to be able to draw on the spirit's power. When she is doing so, she takes on some of the physical appearance of the spirit, sprouting a second pair of white, feathered wings. Mihiyo's ability to communicate with and reason with spirits also allowed her to save the life of a young Coatl, Mikistli, who she found near death on the border of Wind territory. From then on, Mikistli became her traveling companion, and his own set of strange powers proved invaluable on some of her more dangerous expeditions. Eventually, the pair settled in a Lightning clan, where they now spend their time communing with the local spirits and caring for their new clanmates.

However, Mihiyo knows one secret that Mikistli does not - the little Coatl should not be alive. Mihiyo's intervention saved Mikistli's life, but her close interaction with the dragon's spirit caused him to be inadvertently bonded to her. Their connection is what sustains Mikistli's tenuous grip on the world of the living - without it, the Coatl would die. With no way to know the consequences of such a bond, Mihiyo often fears for the safety of the young dragon she has grown to care for. One day, she will have to tell him the truth - but until she gets a definite answer from her spirit companions about what harm his condition could cause, she will keep the truth to herself.
