He thought it would last forever. That was his first mistake.
He couldn't help but dream about forever, when the little hatchling was so innocent despite their circumstances. He did his best to keep her under his wing, to shield her from the horror she inevitably saw.
"We're a team," she said, golden bright eyes glimmering with hope. "We have to look out for each other!"
He tried to look out for her. He doesn't know what happened. But one morning, he awoke and she was gone. He looked everywhere, and yet all he found was her tattered hat.
He saw red.
It didn't care what took her, all he knew is he was getting her back. If it was the last thing he did, he would see those golden eyes again. He would see her smile, he would hear her laugh.
He tore across the entirety of the Expanse. Searching, asking, hoping she'd be okay. The longer he went, the more hope he lost. But he couldn't give up. She was out there, he had to find her.
In his search, he got struck. It seemed that everything was against him, even Stormcatcher himself. A great snake of white-hot pain lashed out at him, striking him between the wings and sending him crashing into the Canyon.
His vision was dark. He saw red.
Slowly, surely, he slipped into blackness.
Then he woke up.
