This retired wayfarer put down his watchful skill and picked up a quill, investing several years into writing and publishing several new maps and navigation guides. His books, along with many others he found to be treats while he was resting in his quarters on board, grew into a small personal library. Then a medium one. Then a large one. Then a bookstore, running out of his own home, as his carefully curated collection became quite the gift on the town he first sailed off from! Now the older gentleman is always ready to welcome drakes into the ship’s hull, lit by lanterns and the fire under a tea kettle, books lining the curved walls as high as gravity would allow and allow them to browse or buy as they wish. Truly, he only switched from being one pillar of the community to the pillar of another.

"Books are a uniquely portable magic, don't you think?"

There is no better feeling than wisps of clouds chasing one another through your spiny crest as you glide through the skies over wind’s domain, none whatsoever. The absolute freedom that comes from living in the landscape painted by a god of acceptance and open air, open wind just as stable as the land due to long feathered wings? By the Windsinger himself, Suria wouldn’t give it up for even a day, no matter the cost. He seemed to be molded to this sky.

Perhaps that was why the simple courier became so utterly fascinated by skyships as soon as he, when delivering a package, nearly rammed into one hidden by the cloud cover! He spewed excited questions to the dragons of the town he’d been sent to, who explained their port and the concept of vessels that could soar like dragons. He instantly tossed down his satchel and declared he “will leave this town as a crew member on one of those ships, or not at all!” The inn keep was ecstatic. The cook, who watched him eat three guardian’s portion’s worth of food, was far less so.

Luckily, with his eager skills and experience with reading and gliding over wind currents landed him a job just as quick as he’d hoped. His little raptor arms weren’t quite up to the task of handling rigging and steering, but his natural flying talents made him an excellent scout. He also had a fantastic memory of currents, and his ship became exalted as the fastest of the fleet due to his slight and constant adjustments to make the ship run as quickly and smoothly as it could.

It only took him 3 years- an incredibly short time- to be known as a professional skysailor, and climb the ranks of his vessel to be a proper wayfarer. He never had to study the usual maps and charts, simply relying and excelling with what he’d learned firsthand. For decades he kept this up, the ship becoming his home and the crew his family. He wanted members retire or move on, two new captains, countless deckhands thinking they could own the sky or getting jelly legs as their first real voyage began. Purely by seniority he was respected, and by his knowledge and kindness he was beloved.

He watched his feathers start to gray as the ship’s stern began to rust, both of them having weathered too much rain and cold over the decades. The ship was nearing its time to retire and so was he; so as a final request of his company, he asked to buy the old thing off of them. Sentimental value, he explained, and they were happy to not have to pay more laborers to scrap the vessel. Combining that purchase with a plot of land allowed him to make the worst new impression on his new neighbors, as he borrowed some friends and landed the skyship directly between two houses, tipped onto its side!
