PERSONAL FILE:
xxx Mari was born to distant wayfinder, outlanders upon the chilling waters of the far south. Her kin, her family, swam the oceans, walked the land, and soared the skies. Mari was raised a healer, like her mother before her and all her sisters alongside her. She tended to the ill and to the injured. In the frozen southern lands, there was no shortage of frostbite, especially among non-ice dragons, snow blindness, and trauma from falling. Mari was proficient with her trade, and she had never planned on leaving her home waters. Like many dragons though, their fate is out of their claws.

For decades, the oceans around the Southern Icefields have been warming earlier and earlier. Mari's clan, as well as most of the clans on the coast, rely on the Ice Sheets for most of their food for the year. All that ice needed for survival disappears before the clan has found sufficient food, leading the clan to stray farther from home to find what it needs. Mari and her female relatives rarely strayed far from the relative safety of the pack ice and glaciers, but Mari and the other adults were all needed to find enough food. Mari, alongside her pod going north, was caught in a sudden, mighty squall. Mari was pulled away from her group and pushed far out to sea.

Mari could not find her bearings in the weather and only escaped the whipping waves as she dragged herself up on a large iceberg, another symptom of the warming waters. She gripped the ice with her claws, and purposely embedded herself into the ice with her own magic to escape the wind and sleet. Inside the ice, Mari slept, exhausted from swimming, climbing, and magic. Mari isn't sure how much time passed until she woke up. In the ice, time tends to slow considerably. Mari could keep herself alive even when encased in the ice, but time is the cost. When she did finally wake up, the ice had melted, releasing her head and the ends of her limbs from the frozen tomb, but she was still paralyzed by the cold and ice. Her eyes, free to move, investigated her surroundings. The Iceberg had beached itself somewhere that Mari has never seen. Large columns of rock, distant cliffs, round pebble beaches, and bamboo coated in frost sticking out of any spare room.

"Windswept Plateau?" Mari thought to herself. This was the other side of the ocean from the Southern Icefield, hundreds and hundreds of miles away. It must have taken months to get here, but Mari's estimate. As Mari waited for the ice to melt, and for her strength to return, she just investigated every further. She had never been this far north. She had seen islands, sure, but she's never reached the mainland before. Mari was barely able to wiggle her toes by the time the raiders crossed her path. Dragons wrapped with chewed chainmail and thick canvas armor. They looked at Mari with curiosity and also something else, opportunity. They took their weapons and chipped away at the ice, freeing Mari soon after. Before Mari could move around though, they pulled Mari from the beach and into patch of cleared and thawed Bamboo patch.

Their eyes were red like blood, their skin or scales like maps of warfare, scars and blemishes and burns alike. Plague dragons, Mari realized, had found her, and she was horrified to know their intention. They spoke a language she couldn't understand, a rough and harsh sound to her. She had been told stories about the Scarred Wasteland; a brutal land of monsters, disease, and warfare. Mari was sure that these dragons would murder her, or eat her, or a third option that she dared not imagine, or all three, but she waited in vain. They waited for her to warm up and get moving, and they brought her a large pot full of seafood stew. Despite her terror, Mari was starving and she ate greedily. It was good, but terribly spicy. Mari didn't really care though.

When Mari had eaten her fill, the Plague dragons tried to talk to her. Mari couldn't understand them and tried to express that, but the Plague dragons had considerable trouble finding an interpreter. At some point, as the sun began to lower into the sky, they had found someone in the warband who could translate.

"Hello, my name is Seamus" the young Mirror started slowly. He had silver gilding embedded into his skin and soft green eyes, "I was instructed to ask you some questions miss." The dragon seemed unsure of his words. Clearly he wasn't an expert in the language, but Mari thought he was doing fine.

"It is nice to meet you Seam, my name is Mari," She bowed to the comparatively small Mirror. The Mirror looked from side to side at the chuckling Plague dragons around him. "You may ask your questions."

Seamus turned and spoke to a larger Mirror and then turned back to Mari, "Are you, hmm, uh," the dragon falters as he searches for the words, "the food?" He finally asked after a few seconds.

And that was the start of a rapport, Mari felt. Seamus and Mari passed back and forth, Seamus' words growing more and more comfortable as his language muscles got used to the tongue again. The questions were fairly general, "Where are you? Why were you in the Ice? Are you alone?" When the questions were done, the sun had already gone down. Mari could see the lights of dozens of camps through the Bamboo forest. As soon as Mari was able, she was guided through the forest and past a triage group tending to several injured dragons. Most of the injured appears to have been struck ill, but the occasional bandage or brace too were visible to Mari. One dragon, clearly suffering from a injured leg joint, swollen with fluid, caught Mari's attention. The dragon was seemingly unbothered by the injury, testament to the resilience of Plague dragons.

Mari knelt to this dragon and inspected the injury. The dragon spoke and Seamus translated, "Impressive, innit? It was a snapper. Grabbed my leg. Nearly took it off at that." The Plague dragon seemed quite proud of it. Mari inhaled and then blew a wind of Icy magic onto the swelling, which began to reduce, the discoloration as well seeming to fade. The dragons in the Triage, mostly surgeons by the looks of it, as well as Mari's entourage watched the spectacle with wonder. The patient, testing the limb smiled and laughed wildly.

Mari was soon led farther into the makeshift medical ward and to a dragon at the back of the hospital. The dragon, bandaged up but seemingly lucid turned to Mari, the soldiers, and Seamus. With a muffled voice, the dragon speaks, "Welcome, I hope you have not been mistreated." Seamus translates as well as he can. Mari nods at the dragon as a chatter of foreign voice goes on behind her. "They want you to help him."

Mari looks at the patient. Whatever injury could be beneath the bandages? Burns? Lacerations? Sores and pustules? Mari gingerly begins to undo the gauze and bandages to reveal dozens of different injuries from cuts and punctures to bruises. None of them alone are fatal, but combined, they had rendered the dragon bed ridden. Any dragon back home with these injuries would have died long ago, or would be on considerable pain reduction. Mari got to work as well as she could. With a cold wind, the energy washed over the dragon. The inflammation across his body declining slightly. Though the observers seemed disappointed, they didn't put up a fuss. "Thank you stranger." Seamus repeated to Mari. The patient stretched a little, testing their mobility and pain. They nodded to Mari. "Can you assist my recovery?"

The warband remained in the area for the next few days, allowing Mari plenty of time to assist at the hospital. Her capabilities were unique among the Medicine Dragons and doctors there and greatly appreciated. Mari's primary patient though, the stranger to her, grew gradually better. His injuries began to heal, quickly in fact, much to do with his Element and partially from her magic. Mari met several interesting characters during her stay, such as the Bard and Seamus, as well as various soldiers of various breeds and dispositions. Mari was curious about her patient, but she didn't pry into the private affairs. Many of the dragons would bring her patient food, or reports on the surrounding area, indicating his rank, and most of them recalled the dragon fondly.

Soon enough, Mari's patient was up and moving, seemingly without limitation now. Iron clad, healthy and fully armed, the patient was imposing in a new way. Not the cool, collected and distant patient, but a dragon of presence and adoration. He smiled as he passed by others, he spoke plainly with them, and he shared their time and resources, as they did with his. Mari finally realized who this dragon was. He was their leader, a king and hero of thousands. Mari came to know the reason for a whole King to be this far from his homeland, a war, of course. They had chased their foe this far south but have lost their prey in the Bamboo and cliffs, and, soon, they are going to return home.

Mari had seen so many new things in her short time lost in the wide open world. She had made some friends, healed a King, and had taken step on another continent. What else could she have dreamed off. She realized during this time that her way of life back home was dead. Her family would be forced to change, and they wouldn't be the same afterwards. Generations of tradition, evaporating to nothing. Mari didn't want to return to that slow death. Maybe she could use her skills elsewhere, in a new place. Brennus, her patient, asked of her what she had been hoping for. "Will you come with me?"

Mari took Brennus up on his offer. When they returned to the Vanguard, Mari received her filigree, a symbol of servitude in the Horde. To this day, Mari serves as Brennus' personal physician at his palace in the Vanguard. Though of low class, a servant in status, Mari enjoys a comfort that few in the wasteland can achieve. Her life is stable, and she has respect of many. She likes to think that she has made a difference in her years at the Vanguard. She has come to be a sort of leader among the servants, helping to organize their efforts on the palace grounds. She, unlike many, is able to speak plainly with the soldiers and court. They seem to like her after all.

Mari tended to Eleri, Brennus' wife and Queen, when she was attacked by the Regency forces after the election of the current Great Khan. Then, a while later, Mari assisted in Eleri's delivery of her three childrens' eggs. It was difficult due to Mari's previously mentioned injuries. Mari helped care for the children as they grew. She didn't do much teaching, but they did pick up a little magic and some world knowledge from her stories. The children really liked Mari's stories because they were unique.
