The oldest of two siblings, initially born into the nature flight; Raeven grew up with an insatiable curiosity aimed at the world and all its minute natural functions.
Magic came easily to him- and not just the sort expected of empathetic abilities expected of Skydancers, but healing magic too. Raeven was able to swiftly and easily pick up any material presented in books- sometimes managing to master new spells and techniques in a matter of hours, his knack for understanding the finer workings of the body and mind were unparalleled in his peer group.

This prodigal trait was encouraged by his family, though not without its own sort of consequences. To call him cocky isn't precisely correct, his heart remained tender and loving where others might have grown arrogant.
But for a dragon to whom the sky seemed too restrictive a limit, there grew in him a certain fearlessness that perhaps should have been quelled.

All of this- his fearlessness, his skill, his tenderhearted nature- came to a head seven months before he was meant to ship out to the Starfall isles, to complete an exam that would allow him to pursue knowledge and an occupation greater than what the Gladeveins had to offer him.
He had initially planned to train as a healer, an occupation he found scratched both his itch to help others and to bombard his mind with enough information that could make any other dragon's head spin.

His younger brother, Corvus; fiercely intelligent in his own right but far more stubborn and reserved, had agreed to help in concocting a new sort of magic ritual.
Something original, and powerful, to give him a leg-up in the exam and ensure his acceptance.

The spell, of course, went horribly wrong. Not immediately, of course- initially it seemed as if the ritual had been a miraculous dud. All those flashing lights and sounds, meant to heal grievous wounds in the body but winding up as a glorified puff of smoke instead, dissipating in a matter of minutes and leaving the two brothers amused and disappointed in equal parts. It had been experimental, after all, and they had time yet to plan for more.

As the days passed, however, Corvus's health took a rapid turn for the worst. His body, it seemed, was falling apart at the seams- and the one healthy young skydancer took ill. No matter how Raeven, or their parents, or other healers that were hired to bring in and see him tried, his condition only worsened. Within a month and a half, he was dead.

Raeven was wracked with guilt. The coincidence was too strong, the disease had spread too quickly and terribly to be natural- the unstable ritual had surely killed his younger brother. All of his brilliance had failed him, and his family. Unable to meet his parents' eyes, the shadow that fell over their clan was palpable, and lingered for days in the wake of the loss.

It was then, that a little voice started piping up from the back of his mind. Forbidden texts, shunned artifacts, concepts the healers he had apprenticed under had spoken only in whispers if at all. Dark magic, was what they called it if they ever gave name to it at all. And a concept the healers seemed to fear as much as the dark itself. Pulling a soul back from the underworld through forbidden, artificial means-- Necromancy.

Posessed by some manic spark, Raeven threw himself into research, but was frustrated and unsatisfied by the lack of plentiful information to be found. There were no tomes or scrolls to be read, any dragon he attempted to press for knowledge of the subject recoiled in horror. If he were to see his brother alive and well again, he realized, it wouldn't be here. And if a place of life wouldn't give him the answers he sought, then perhaps. Perhaps. What he needed was a place of death.

He snuck to his brother's resting place in the dead of night, unearthing his remains and fleeing, Corvus's corpse in tow. He fled for weeks by air and foot to the Tangled Woods, and found in it the cursed knowledge he'd sought so obsessively.

Weeks of effort, practice and research paid off, in the end. His eyes wild, tinged with frenzy brought about by grief and desperation (and perhaps a hint of purple filming over the once green irises), Raeven laid out the remains of his brother's withered body across a makeshift altar. The ritual he performed this time would be perfect. Horribly, tragically perfect.

Two identical, newly violet eyes cracked open to the dark skies above with a pained gasp, swiftly enveloped by his brother's wings and arms in a relieved embrace. Corvus and Raeven were reunited, at least. But at a cost; in reaching into the veil beyond to retrieve his brother, both Skydancers had been forever changed.

Deathtouched they both were. Their bodies- scales, fur, feathers and all- marred with arcane tattoos that indicated them as creatures no longer solidly placed among the world of the living. All would see the evidence of their crime, and recoil from them. Though that was the least of Corvus's ailments.

Perfect though the spell to return him was, imperfect was the magic that bound him to a still decomposing form. Corvus was little more than a ghost possessing a corpse; his spirit and mind bright, but his body decaying and prone to the desire to feed on the life force of other dragons. A zombie- or perhaps a lich.

Raeven hadn't come this far to only come this far. Resolve steeled by madness, the oldest brother dedicated himself to becoming magically adept enough to return his brother to life. Fully and completely. Only then could he permit himself to rest.

As planned, and exactly on time, the necromancer traveled to the Starfall Isles, and the exam. Disguising himself as a healer and alchemist hungry for information, Corvus smuggled close and out of sight for safety. The two hid their marks, their curse, from the eyes of the world at large.

Standing then, at the gates of the Academy of Arcane Practice and Research, Raeven inhaled deeply; his ecstatic grin hidden by his mask. He had work to do.

TL;DR
Prodigal Nature dragon studying to be a healer accidentally kills his brother, goes to Shadow to find a way to bring him back and becomes a necromancer with a zombie brother. Studies at an academy in Arcane to fix him and bring him fully back to life, falls in love with a grumpy imperial boi along the way.
