PELEANA
The Exile mischievous | tempestuous | passionate
Peleana was exiled from her home clan by her family, who tired of her temper and her endless quarrels with her sisters. She wasn't necessarily wrong, but her intensity and belligerence left little room for reasoned discourse.
In Clan Corpse-Flower she found a home among the Dusk Court and has flourished as a pyromancer. In the Mage's Collegium she is constantly railing against Iphion's strictures and limitations on experimentation.
In gilt, in guilt, in temper’s flare;
reason not with the sea and not with the sky. Your question, your conquest, is to go forth in that glorious night and crown yourself with blood and tears. A biting tongue, a sharper wit; the sacred items in the temple strewn ‘round, the cards scattered and disintegrating on the wind. No fate for me, you roll off your tongue, no going gentle into that good night - no rest, no end to the winding roads; no absolution, not for me. Only the flames - only the ire - only the Hunt.
The plant Clermontia peleana is a critically endangered Hawaiian tree. Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire, who came to Hawaiʻi after being exiled by her father because of her temper. She is a wanderer and a shape-shifter who likes a little mischief. If you see her, offer her help. If you have a bottle of spirits, even better. Refuse her requests and suffer her wrath.

For her blessings, I drew the five of cups, represented by the capybara. This card is usually drawn in the presence of a loss, in Peleana’s case, her exile. The capybara’s affinity with water made this a bit unclear, as she is so attuned to fire. I drew the tower card for clarification. Represented by the termite, the tower card is a card of impermanence. The termite builds amazing networks and grand mazes to live in, only for them to be washed away by the desert rains. The termite teaches us that just because something may not be permanent doesn’t mean it isn’t worth doing. Peleana has seen impermanence firsthand during her exile, but from this lesson, she knows that such destruction is no reason to give up, but rather a time to light the fire of ambition and move on. Water, the element of healing, makes more sense in this context. The realization may be subconscious and subdued by her anger, but perhaps her soul is ready to let the water win just this once and allow herself to heal from her loss.
For her challenge, I drew the three of wands represented by the woodpecker. The three of wands belongs to the lost and unfocused. When a woodpecker knocks, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly where it is due way the environment distorts sound. Peleana’s soul may be ready to move on, but her mind and body lack the same direction; their goals are distorted. The people of her new clan will surely say things that flare her temper, but if she chooses to shout, her own voice will only contribute to the disorienting echo. Her challenge is to stop and listen to those around her; she must keep her anger in check and truly orient all three aspects of her being so they may proceed as one and unlock the true potential of her blessing.
For action, I drew the ace of pentacles represented by the dung beetle. This rather inglorious creature has one of the most important lessons to share: repurposing and redirection. Peleana’s firey personality is not the issue, it is merely how she uses it. The same temper that separated her from her sisters can be used in defense of those in need, or in opposition to injustice; her anger at being exiled can be turned against those that judge others unfairly. Her fire is one that hurts, but it may be time to repurpose it into one that warms. To do away with anger is to open the soul to others; the calm spirit listens and heals best, allowing one to walk down the path of life leaving nothing but inspiration and lessons learned in their wake.
