“Hail.”
Umber nodded a curt response to his fellow sentry’s greeting. He relieved the dragon and took up his post at the gate. For centuries he had stood watch here, from dawn to dusk, never once moving a muscle until he was relieved of duty. A tedious job, perhaps, but someone had to do it.
Every now and then, there were distractions. Some came to adopt hatchlings and trade, but most were tourists. Fools who thought it was brave or funny to poke at the guardsman and try to get him to move. Oddly enough, most of these idiots seemed to hail from the Sunbeam Ruins to the East bordering his brother, Agent's, guard station. Umber ignored them all with well-trained aplomb. They were beneath him. He was a royal sentry of the Isle of Shadows. Thus he had been taught to think, long centuries ago. It had been drilled into him until it became a very part of his being.
Ah, there was one now, yellow eyes marking whence they hailed. Poking and prodding and jumping up and down before him, acting like a moron in public in an effort to get him to blink or sneeze. It was laughable, but Umber wouldn’t laugh even if he were not on duty. He was not that kind of a dragon. He ignored their antics and held rigidly to his post, keeping to his duty of watching out for what was important -- threats to the security of the Isle of Shadows.
“Come off it, Dragomere, he won’t move. They train these guys until their minds break,” the idiot’s female companion said. “You’re making a fool of yourself.”
“I just want to see him move, just a little bit, that’s all -- is that so wrong?” the idiot, a Mirror apparently named Dragomere, said gaily, continuing his hopping dance frenzy.
A tiny female Fae, dressed in a hooded cloak, approached the gate, acting elderly and decrepit. Umber noticed she had earthen brown eyes. It was hard to tell under the cloak, but he thought she might have multigaze. He watched her out of the corner of one eye as she approached in her limping, doddering way and the fool continued to frisk and frolic. When she was very near, she threw off her cloak, revealing the bomb strapped to her chest. “The Isle of Shadows will fall! Earthshaker rules!” she cried, holding up a detonator switch.
Faster than lightning, Umber moved. His snapping jaws closed on the Fae, and the detonator switch fell from her limp grasp. A puddle of rich red blood, small like the tiny dragon but very clear to see, pooled around Dragomere’s suddenly stilled feet.
Blood dripping from his mouth, Umber carefully lowered the body of the Fae to the ground, mindful of the still-live bomb. “Please clear the area,” he said in a voice of clear command. “We must secure the premises until the bomb can be dismantled.”
Dragomere’s more sensible companion pulled him away from the scene. Umber called in for the bomb squad and resumed his quiet sentry at the gate, awaiting their arrival. Just another day on duty.
