There was no denying that Jedidiah had the Sawyer mutation when he was born. Big for a hatchling with tusks that protruded from his lips, pointy and dangerous looking. His father's council of snakes quickly snatched him up, encouraging Mortimer to begin raising him as his eventual heir. Though he listened, Mortimer had his doubts. Sure, Jed was big and strong but he was also soft and sweet. He lacked what it would take to run a place like Haven, the preacher was sure of it.

Instead of listening to any of the lessons he was being taught, Jedidiah's mind would wander to other things. The sound of the birds chirping outside the window, the flowers in his father's yard swaying in the breeze. He couldn't have cared less about what his father and his father's teachers were saying and that was a problem.

Instead of forcing his son into a role he clearly wasn't fit for, Mortimer found something else for Jed to do. Given his size, people were naturally intimidated by him. It didn't matter that he'd sooner hurt himself than a fly. All people saw was the outside, a beast of a man that could crush another's head with one fist. Instead of being forced into one role he was forced into another, becoming his father's reluctant enforcer. Rarely did he ever have to resort to violence (one look at him had most turning tail or begging for forgiveness) but when he did it wasn't pretty.

The longer Jed was forced to perform these punishments and tortures, the more miserable he became. Pretty soon the violence became more and more frequent, requiring him to sink deeper and deeper into his role as torturer and executioner.

And then one day it all came crashing down.

She was innocent of any crime, the poor girl he was being forced to punish for trying to leave. She'd been captured just outside of Haven's borders and insisted throughout all of the pain she was enduring that she'd simply wandered out of bounds by mistake while picking herbs. It was clear to Jed that she was telling the truth but his father's bloodhounds, the men who he called his council, were unconvinced.

That poor girl died for nothing. Her only sin not realizing how far she'd walked. He couldn't take it anymore, he couldn't keep hurting and killing innocent folk just because he was told to. So he hatched a plan to leave, vowing to himself that he'd do his best to live a life free from violence and bloodshed.

It's kind of funny how he ended up in the gorge. He'd been traveling from place to place for months when he stumbled upon the campsite. He didn't plan on sticking around but those plans changed when he was caught by a grumpy fellow named Dante who orced him further into camp where their leader was to "answer a few a questions". You can imagine how surprised he was to see, of all people, his long lost brother Mordecai.

The welcome wasn't exactly warm at first but it didn't take too long for Mordy to see that he meant no harm. Jedidiah explained what happened, how he couldn't live that life anymore and his brother listened. To his surprise, an invitation to stay would follow and at first, he turned it down. He had no desire to live life as an outlaw but Mordecai had other plans for him.

It seemed that the gang was in need of someone to care for their hogs and buffalo as well as tend the fields and mind the crops. Mordy explained that they intended to stay in the gorge and make a life there because they too were tired of running. Naturally, that meant that they'd need someone to help out around the place and take care of the more mundane daily tasks while they were busy well, being outlaws.

Jed agreed to give it a shot and has happily been there ever since. There are times where he's has had to flex his muscle but overall his brother has kept his word and let Jedidiah live the pacifist life he'd dreamed of.

Jedidiah spends his days taking care of the livestock and tending to the crops just as he'd promised to do. He also acts as the head cook seeing as cooking comes naturally to him.

Just like in Haven he stays in one of the barns only now this is his choice. He even has his own personal garden of herbs and flowers, something he's mighty proud of and happy to show off to anyone willing to see it. He gets along well with most of the gang, save for Holland who he despises to his very core. He especially likes Knox who pays him regular visits to relax among the flowers and talk about his day.

He is loyal to Mordecai to a fault and quick to come to his defense on most things, even if he doesn't always agree with Mordecai's choices. Really he's just a gentle giant who prefers being your friend rather than your foe.

FAMILY: Father- Mortimer, Mother- Melanie-may, Brothers- Zachariah, Mordecai, Newt & Isaiah

SEXUALITY: Bisexual

RELATIONSHIPS: Phi

BELONGINGS:

• A cleaver which he uses for chopping meat rather than for fighting and killing.

• Cigarettes that he keeps in his shirt pocket and swears he'll quit using.

• A heavy pair of leather work gloves that he hangs in his belt and fancy spurs that he never uses on his mount, a large bison named Lad.

OTHER BITS OF INFO:

• Jed enjoys baking and making all sorts of treats. He uses fresh ingredients from his personal garden and takes frequent trips out of the gorge and to Dagna and Othello's store for the rest.

• If you're looking for someone to help you out, Jedidiah is your guy. He very rarely turns down a request for help from a friend and lends out his muscles often. Knox and Harper, in particular, come to Jed for help moving the heavier pieces of scrap they find.

• He loves his graveyard guardian and spoils her with food and affection. Chunky and lazy, Daisy is never too far from Jed's side and especially loves sunning herself while he toils away in the fields and garden.
