Olyvar had always been alone growing up, ans so he was locked in a struggle against the treasure in his hoard. Could he find salvage enough stuff to be able to afford a full meal, or would he have to settle for half portions and the gnawing feeling of failure in his stomach? He wasn't naturally magically talented, and he lacked the sheer mass that would make him employable for manual labour. Untethered, he drifted from place to place looking for somewhere he might be able to stay, a clan to take him in, just something...

Over time he found that the thing that made him feel least alone was gliding through the sky, when the wind would ruffle his fans affectionately and nudge him in the right direction. He liked ti take it as a sign; it was that or accept that nobody ever cared.

From the sky he was able to see the length and breadth of Sornieth, and he started sketching what he saw as he travelled, marking his progress as he went. It was through these first primitive maps that he realised he had an unusual gift, he could clearly remember the things he had seen - it was as if he was still looking at them. This proved to be useful as he could look his fill in the air, and mark it down when he landed hours later. In one settlement a clan elder diagnosed it as an 'Eidetic memory' but it didn't matter, it just let him start to build up a detailed map of the wild areas of Sornieth.

Even though he loved flying, he wasn't stupid enough to think that he was untouchable. When the storm seekers started to flock together he would land and seek shelter where he could find it. It was on an evening like that when a particularly horrendous maelstrom darkened the skies.
