┌━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┐
Wandering in the swamps of the Viridian Labyrinth, you stumble across a small, dilapidated shack, mired in the mud. Unassuming from the outside, smoke curls from the rickety chimney, smelling invitingly of a roast in the oven, seasoned to perfection.
Were you to creep closer to the shack, you would hear a soft humming coming from the dragon inside. If you dared to knock on the door, the humming would cease, and the door would creak open just a crack, inviting you inside. Stepping into the small interior (were you to do so), you would find a large oak table, finely crafted and clearly treated with care, taking up the vast majority of the room. Across the table from you would be sitting a friendly looking Spiral shuffling a stack of purple cards over and over again. In fact, the more you watched, the more you would have trouble distinguishing between the dragon and his cards; his movements would be so fluid and graceful that soon you would see the cards as an extension of the living dragon, rather than inanimate objects. So entranced would you have been by this spectacle that you would have suddenly realized you were standing directly across from the Spiral, who would still be smiling at you pleasantly. The door would have shut behind you, but you would not have realized that yet. Without so much as an introduction or word of greeting, the Spiral would begin setting out cards in front of you, six in all. You would stare into the first, watching in awe as the card displayed someone you loved. The image of your loved one appeared so lifelike, it was as if the card were merely a portal showing you what they were doing at that very moment. Transfixed, you would snap your attention back to the present when the Spiral flipped the card over, obscuring the image within. With a single talon, he would direct your attention to the second card. The image in this card: your greatest fear. Your eyes would widen and your pulse quicken in response to the image in the second card, but somehow you would not be able to look away. The Spiral would wait a little longer before turning that card over too. Then he would reveal the third card: someone you had lost. Although your mind would tell you they were dead, the card would show you the one you lost when they were still alive and well. You felt tears come to your eyes, and had to look away before the Spiral had flipped the card. The sound of another card turning over would fill you with hope and you would open your eyes again, to take in a perfect reenactment of the happiest moment of your life, displayed neatly inside the borders of yet another card. The scene would cause you to experience the same joy that you had in that moment, and you would be slightly disappointed when that card, like all the others, was flipped over. It’s replacement was the thing you hated most in all the world. You could practically feel your blood boil and your brow furrow in anger. How dare the Spiral show you this card?! But before you could voice your anger, the dragon would direct your attention to the sixth and final card. And there it was. The thing you wanted most in all the world. So obvious, so simple an answer to that previously answerless question you had been asking yourself all this time. The image displayed in the card’s surface just felt right, you needed it to be true. You couldn’t live one more second without it. The Spiral’s smile returned, but something about it seemed...off… sinister, unsettling. You would begin to feel a sinking in the pit of your stomach, a creeping realization that the dragon in front of you had the power to offer you what you had seen in the sixth card, to make it into reality… The only question left was: at what cost? At this moment, you would have looked behind you at the only exit, only now realizing that it was closed. Slowly, your eyes would have turned back to the Spiral, only to watch in terror as a purple smoke began to rise from the cards, enveloping the dragon completely until only its eyes were visible, glowing a deep, sickly purple. What happens next? I guess you'll have to knock to find out. |
