Soft rays of sunshine have only just begun to alight gently on a rumpled bedspread as the skydancer, lean as a wolf and bright as a fox, starts picking up her clothing from their heaps on the floor.

She's just finished pulling on a shirt when a sleep-addled voice groans from somewhere beneath the sheets. 'Where are you going?'

The words cut through the silent morning. The skydancer winces. 'Nowhere,' comes the too-quick reply.

Their companion-- if you call someone a companion when they've only known you for eight hours-- stirs and is instantly on the alert. They frown at the skydancer, who can't help but feel as naked beneath their piercing gaze as she was hours ago. The realisation dawns.

'Oh,' they say bitterly, 'you're a drifter.'

'If that is what you call us in this part of town, yes.' She tries to ignore their stares as she tugs on her boots. Both of them know that there is no use in asking her to stay because it is not in her nature to linger long after she isn't needed. Some of those she beds will beg anyway; sometimes, it is her who wishes she would not have to go.

This companion, with their bright eyes and light step, seems to be wiser than most and have resigned themselves to it. They ask, 'When will I forget your name?'

'Withing the hour.'

'And your fa-- likeness?'

The skydancer exhales and busies herself with the clasp of her cloak. 'A day at the very most.'

She does not dare look back when she leaves the small hut, but she can feel them staring at her back. There is no malice in their tone when they bid her goodbye.

Maybe it is a curse to be remembered, but she will never know what that feels like. Those who see her face and hear her name will forget it within hours, though the few (fortunate or not, it is not anyone's place to say) who have the pleasure of feeling her breath on their skin and her lips on theirs may cling to her likeness for the rest of the day and be haunted by her touch for the rest of their lives.

It is selfish, she knows, to leave them in that state, but she has given so much to hear her name whispered like a prayer by those who know her briefly, intimately. It is a price she is willing to pay, from her first breath to her last.
