Cerastes paced in the medicine den grumbling to himself. His clan had had a outbreak of plague, and he, being the medic, had a ridiculous amount of responsibility on his shoulders. He surveyed his den, clan mates covered in sores and filth rolled in pain. He sighed, his mentor was the first dragon to fall to the sickness, and Cerastes was the only dragon left untouched by the sickness. Cerastes wasn’t ready to become a full medic. He was barly able to cure his own runny nose.

A familiar voice called from across the den “Cerastes!” Cerastes spun around, he didn’t hear that right, it sounded like….

“Cerastes!” A dragon with stardust for scales materialized in front of him, he was a semi transparent imperal.

Cerastes looked at the starry dragon, “who are you?” he inquired, taking a step towards the imperial.

The imperial laughed, his voice hearty as church bells. “You don’t remember me? Why, I’m almost offended.”

Cerastes eyes widened “Timber?”

His deceased mentor nodded repeatedly “Who else?" He chortled, ".. I see I didn’t get a burial.” gesturing to his corpse still on the moss bed. Cerastes shuffled his claws, hanging his head like a scolded child. ”Don’t feel bad, I see you’ve been busy” Timber coxed. Cerastes grimaced.

“Did you come here because you know the cure?” Cerastes whispered, his soft voice barly audible in the silent den.

“No," Timber addmited. "I just came to keep you company”

“Why?” He lifted his head, eyes searching his mentors face for anything, for any dammed reason--

“Because you'll be quite lonely here. Unlike your comrades, you're immoral.”

Cerastes blinked, his jaw clenching as his stomach twisted. Timber chuckled “why else would you survive a epidemic like this? You’ve been weakened by lack of food, water, and sleep, surrounded by disease and decay...but you're fine”

Through glassy tears Cerastes spoke “could you please do something to save them, I-they don’t have forever”

“This is the clan’s punishment for crimes they committed.”

“What crimes!” the starry figure began to fade, a blank expression on his face. “Ple-please!” Cerastes lunged with burning tears, desperately trying to hold his mentor. “Please don’t go” he whimpered.

A speck of stardust brushed past his cheek.
