Biography
Never Empty, Never Full
Long ago and yesterday there was a ___1___ alchemist named Baldwin. He lived in the Trading Post and had many ___2___. Everyday, and all day long, he brewed reagents and potions in his vast cauldron. Dragons from all over Sornieth would visit him to brew this or that, as their skill allowed.
One such dragon was ___3___ the ___4___. ___3___ was a ___5___ dragon and had no patience for brewing or collecting ingredients. They wanted results right away. A time came when they needed a ___6___ for a trade, but they were only level ___7___ in alchemy. They went to Baldwin to ___8___ for his help. |

"Please, I would do anything", wailed the ___4___," if you would just brew this one thing for me." "Soon it will be yours," ___9___ Baldwin, "If you come work with me in the brewing laboratory." So every day ___3___ came to the lab and every day Baldwin would find an odd job for them to do. "Today you must mop the ___10___," Baldwin would say, or "now I need you to peel these ___11___," or " make sure you grind this ___12___ very thin." But there was never any time for ___3___ to use the ___13___ cauldron themself. Until one day, when all the other helpers were busy at their tasks, Baldwin took ___3___ aside and told them, "Today I must go to meet the woodwitch, to buy a fungus only they can find." Baldwin handed ___3___ the long stirring pole. Baldwin went on, "I need YOU to watch the cauldron while I am away. Never leave it, and add nothing to the pot. With a little luck, the last ingredient needed to brew your item will be ready when I return." This was ___3___'s ___14___ chance and they were very ___15___. They bragged and lorded over the other helpers about how Baldwin had chosen only ___3___ to mind the cauldron. Dragons came to add ingredients to the giant pot, but ___3___ turned them all away, telling them they would have to wait until Baldwin returned. Baldwin was gone one hour, then two, and ___3___ became bored. And then they became hungry. The smell from the cauldron was so wonderful that they needed just a tiny taste. And then the taste became a sip and a gump, and soon the cauldron was almost empty. |

___3___ banged on the side of the cauldron with the stirring pole. "Quick I need insects," they shouted. And the helpers brought armloads of insects. But the pot was no more full than before. Then they called for meat, and then fish and plants, but no matter how much was thrown into the cauldron it would not fill up. In desperation ___3___ called for water to be added, and even every potion on the shelves, trying to fill the cauldron. No matter what was added, the mixture inside seemed the same amount. Finally they threw themself in. When Baldwin returned, the cauldron was simmering merrily over the fire. The stirring stick was leaned against the chimney bricks, but there was no sign of the foolish dragon. The potion inside swirled and steamed as Baldwin stared down into his newest brew. "This one will be the most interesting yet." |
