MAIRIN - Banshee
When a dragon lies on death's doorsteps, in some clans, there is a wailing that comes before their last breath. It is an eerie song, sometimes lilting, sometimes discordant, always haunting in the worst of ways, following all who hear it through their dreams for weeks on end. There is magic in that song, be it curse or blessing, and there is undoubtedly a string of fate tied to it as well; how else could such a song always precede death?
But such is the way of banshees like Mairin. They are rooted to one clan for all their immortal lives, or at least until the clan dies out, and it is their sacred duty to grieve for each death with as mournful a song as they can muster. They are protectors in a sense, watching over the health of their clan with a quiet sadness in their eyes, but when the time of death comes, they can do nothing but wail.
Mairin wishes she could have some other fate for herself. She is powerless until her clan is one day dust, and all its descendants too have perished. But until then, she weeps and wails, caught up in a grief greater than herself. Dragons will continue to die, and all the while, she will continue to shriek. Such is the way it must be until her clan meets its end.
Sometimes, though, she wonders if she will still be freed if she helps the clan along into the next life. Perhaps that way, she will at last, for the first time, be able to rejoice.
