Biography

10-4-2019
Astyanax arrived at the inn in Starwood Strand. She was confused at first, but the Pearl Catcher was quickly intrigued by how the mist almost seemed to part as she neared the small building. The area around the inn had to be enchanted, somehow, if not the inn itself.

“Hello. Have you come here to stay at the inn?”
Astyanax looked at the Skydancer, and shrugged. She supposed so. It wasn’t as if she was going anywhere else for a while with how the fog seemed to close up behind her.

“Alright then. Please, follow me. I’ll help you get settled in for your stay…”

11-4-2019
Astyanax spent the next day looking around and mapping out the inn, exploring every nook and cranny. She quickly stumbled upon the inn’s small garden, hidden behind some delicate pickered fences. Astyanax took note of the Skydancer that was tending to the flowers. She recognized her as the same dragon who had approached her near the inn’s entrance yesterday.

Just as Astyanax was about to approach her, something must have gotten the Skydancer’s attention, as the dragon had turned her head and left in seemingly quite the hurry. Astyanax didn’t want to disturb the other dragon if she indeed had something important to do, so the Pearlcatcher made a mental note to visit the garden tomorrow. Perhaps the other dragon would be here then, too.

12-4-2019
Astyanax returned to the small garden today, though instead of the Skydancer from before, there was another Skydancer lingering about the garden. This one sprouting feathers so bright, it almost hurt to look at when sunlight was reflected from her gembond feathers. Curious, but still cautious, Astyanax looked on from a distance, attempting to figure out what the other dragon was doing before approaching her. It didn’t take long for the Pearlcatcher to realize that the other dragon was taking out bits and pieces of some of the flora in the garden and putting it in her tiny waist pouch.

Alarmed, Astyanax lept out from where she had been hiding and grabbed the other dragon by her wrist. She asked, perhaps a bit too loudly, what she was doing.

31515368p.png

“O-ow! I- I was just, taking some of the flowers for my potions… I’ve asked Mei, and she’s alright with me taking some of her flowers- Please stop, you’re hurting my wrist…”
A bit belatedly, Astyanax let go of the other dragon’s wrist. She was still suspicious, but she didn’t mean to hurt the other dragon.

31515368p.png

“O-oh, did you think I was stealing from the garden…? W-well, I guess I could have looked kind of suspicious…”
At this, the Skydancer offered Astyanax a small smile.

31515368p.png

“Maybe… You can come with me to my Healing Ward? I can explain everything there.”

13-4-2019
Astyanax followed the Skydancer to the Healing Ward of the inn, where the other dragon quickly proceeded to explain that her name was Canary, and that she was the healer of the inn. She often looked after dragons who are injured or ill around the inn, and so the Skydancer needed many ingredients for her potions… Some of which just so happened to come from the inn’s garden.

31515368p.png

“Mei tends to the garden, when she’s not too busy with some of the hatchlings around the inn. She knows I need some of her plants for my potions sometimes, and I always make the point of asking her before taking any of her flowers, so I’m sure she doesn’t mind.”
Well, if that was the case, then it was really just a misunderstanding. Astyanax apologized for accidentally hurting the other dragon’s wrist.

31515368p.png
“No, it’s- It’s alright. I kind of realized I must have looked kind of suspicious if you hadn’t known anything about me before. And, I’m glad you also care about the flowers in the garden- Mei gets so annoyed whenever some of the other dragons trample on her flowers, accidental or not. I’m sure she’ll be happy to know that there’s another dragon who cares about the garden like she does! Hee hee!”
Canary ruffled her feathers briefly, before she continued.

31515368p.png

“Well, if you’re not too busy tomorrow, you can come back here later. I can show you some of the potions I can make with the plants from the garden!”
Hmm… Astyanax supposed Canary seemed friendly enough. Even if they did get off on the wrong foot, there’s no harm in trying to make more friends, right?

14-4-2019
Astyanax accepted Canary’s invitation to her Healing Ward the next day. She arrived to see that the other dragon had already set up some sort of… complicated brewing stand, with a bubbling cauldron acting as some sort of centerpiece. Canary greeted her with a smile when she saw Astyanax approach.

31515368p.png

“Oh! You came after all! That’s great! I was having some trouble deciding what kind of potion I wanted to brew. Would you happen to have anything in mind?”
Astyanax tilted her head. What about a potion that helped dragons see in the dark? That would be cool.

31515368p.png

“A night-seeing potion? I can’t say I have too much experience with these types of potions, but it does sound interesting!”

15-4-2019
Astyanax watched, somewhat intrigued by the Skydancer’s swift, practised movements as she moved around the room, almost in a waltz. Despite the dragon’s earlier claims regarding being unskilled with brewing the specified potion, Canary seemed to know exactly what she was doing. Astyanax wondered if Canary was actually counting the seconds until the brew boiled as she gathered and prepared the rest of the ingredients to stir into the mix, or if the Skydancer just… knew.

Finally, the mixture in the pot turned a dark shade of crimson. Canary appeared to be wiping the sweat from her forehead before she spoke.

31515368p.png

“I suppose it’s done! Here, you can have some of it- It might be useful in the future!”
Canary handed Astyanax a portion of the potion after she’d poured it in a glass container. The Skydancer appeared to pause momentarily, before she spoke again.

31515368p.png

“And, well- I should give you this as well. Take this as my thanks for visiting me today!”
Astyanax received a gift!

16-4-2019
Astyanax was going about exploring the other parts of the inn that she hadn’t gone about to exploring yet went she heard a familiar voice calling out to her. Turning her head, she realized that it was Canary, the healer from yesterday.

31515368p.png

“Oh, Astyanax! I was looking around the inn for you! I was wondering- Well, since you seemed to like the flowers from Mei’s garden so much, and I know this place that’s in the woods that’s still somewhat near to the inn- I was wondering if you’d like to come see it with me!”
Some place that’s outside the inn? Astyanax had overheard some of the other dragon’s conversation during her exploration of the inn so far, and one common theme that most conversations seemed to have was about the dangers of leaving the inn too soon… Whatever that meant. Besides, what was this place Canary was talking about? It seems ominous...

31515368p.png

“It’s alright! We shouldn’t get lost if we don’t stray too far away from the inn! As to what this place is, well- You’d just have to find out for yourself! Meet me at the inn’s entrance tonight as soon as the sun falls, okay?”
Canary giggled and quickly left, leaving Astyanax to wonder what had just happened.

17-4-2019
Curiosity won over, and Astyanax found herself lingering around the inn’s entrance long after the sun had set. She waited for several moments more, before she heard the distant sound of hasty footsteps, quickly getting closer.

31515368p.png

“Ah! I’m sorry I’m late! How long were you here? I hope I didn’t make you wait long!”
Astyanax shook her head and reassured Canary that it was no big deal. She hadn’t been waiting too long. The Skydancer beamed as she heard this.

31515368p.png

“That’s good to hear! Anyways, we should go, if we want to return by dawn. Here! Follow me!”
Taking Astyanax by her hand, Canary quickly flew forward, past the inn’s entrance and into the woods, her little oil lamp the only thing leading the way in the dark. Astyanax sighed at how easily excitable the Skydancer appeared to be, but she allowed herself to be led towards their unknown destination, regardless.

18-4-2019
Astyanax raised an eyebrow as soon as she realized that Canary was leading them into a cave. The Pearlcatcher stopped and restated her question about where they were heading towards, but Canary just insisted that everything was to be a surprise. Finally, Astyanax relented and stepped through the cave’s entrance after Canary. The two dragons headed a good distance into the cave, before Canary turned back to Astyanax.

31515368p.png

“Alright, we’re here. I’m going to blow out this light. Are you ready?”
Before Astyanax could say anything, the Skydancer took a deep breath, then blew out the light from her lamp with a quick huff. The immediate area around them fell dark instantly, and Astyanax almost yelled, before a small, luminous glow out of the corner of her eye had caught her attention.

Slowly, gradually, the dim glow brightened, and Astyanax took a step back as she realized the neon light had come from the many, small, luminous plants growing on the floor of the cave, extending all the way up to the rocky ceiling. As she looked up, it was almost as if the Pearlcatcher was looking upwards into the constellations, swirling in its vastness.

31515368p.png

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

Turning to Canary, Astyanax nodded, grinning, though the sight was not as beautiful as Canary herself. The Skydancer might have blushed, though she had turned her head before Astyanax could be sure.

The two dragons spent a while admiring the luminous plants in the cave and catching some of the bugs fluttering among the flora, before they made their way back to the inn.

It was several more days into her stay when Astyanax took note of the fading mist around the inn. The fog had always remained thick and impenetrable for the duration of her stay, so the sudden phenomenon had the Pearlcatcher somewhat confused. She decided to take a visit to the Healing Ward and ask the local Healer if it was anything special she should be concerned with.

31515368p.png

“Oh… Astyanax. The mist in the woods fade for the dragons who take their leave from the inn.”
Does… Does that mean she would be able to leave now, if she wanted to?

Nodding sadly, Canary led Astyanax to the inn’s entrance. There was now a clear path leading out from the inn, but when Astyanax asked if Canary could see something similar, the Skydancer shook her head.

31515368p.png

“Those who look after the inn can’t leave it… Someone’s got to look after the inn, afterall, anyways, heh.”
Shaking her head, Canary gave Astyanax a small smile.

31515368p.png

“You were great to have, Astyanax… When you return home, or, wherever you end up, please write to the inn, alright? There’s something with the inn that prevents dragons from seeking it out again, but you can always write, if you wanted to. Here, please take this as my parting gift.”

Astyanax accepted the gift with a small thanks. As she walked past the inn’s entrance, the Pearlcatcher looked back one last time, before she headed deep into the woods, following the path leading out of Starwood Strand, the mist quickly closing up behind her.
