She was beautiful. Perfect. She mumbled these truths to herself as her claw trailed through the pool at the base of the waterfall, hearing them almost as if they were not her own voice. As if the falls themselves proclaimed their beauty, their perfection, as if her reflection in the crystal water was an entity all its own. Here she was, alone and… abandoned. Abandoned by life, lost until she no longer knew the color of the sky, the grass beneath her claws, and she had finally made it out. The wretched caverns were behind her, the dark corridors that swallowed her and consumed her, the echoing thoughts and fathomless depths from which the steady beating of a heart drove her near to madness. She had escaped, and that made her perfect. The glassy crystal that had taken her wings, kept her grounded from the shafts of watery light that ever so often gave her a cruel glimpse of freedom… They made her beautiful. Fragility. Weakness. These were signs of the purest beauty. If her parents had escaped the caverns… Oh, if only. Then they would be *so* proud of her. |

She was beautiful, and everyone agreed. And they would all be beautiful too. If they were not, or they disagreed with her, or they challenged her, they would instead be beautiful corpses. She sat on her throne, a terrible and magnificent queen. Her wings lay at her side, opulent in their exquisite uselessness. At her side lay her guard, Olonan, with claws like sickles and teeth like jagged crystal. Behind her, the steady breath of her enforcer, Rosesmoke, filled the air with warmth and a deep rumbling, a comfort to Shatter like a mother’s touch. They were all beautiful, but she gazed with love at the *most* beautiful thing of all. Galleon’s clutch had hatched a dragon more stunning than anything she had ever seen, a hatchling which now sat before her with wide eyes and a perfect, crystal hide. She hummed, pleased, as the baby chased the darting lights refracted from its own oversized wings. It would be her prince.
She was beautiful, and there were some who did not believe this. Her prince, her perfect prince, was beautiful of face but foul of heart, he opposed her every chance he got. He turned her own subjects against her and marred his perfect hide with the imperfect opal of his imperfect guard. Oh, she had been a fool to allow that foul pearlcatcher to stay, poisoning her prince’s mind with rebellion and poisoning his beauty with his wretched kiss. Now she paced across the smooth floor of her palace hall, shaking with rage. Olonan paced after her, assuring her, encouraging her, affirming her beauty with practiced cadence. It was not enough today. She had been betrayed, and she would not take it lightly. Her subjects had fled, had fought, had shunned her careful plans and loving touch. There was only one solution now. They had fled to the East, and she knew what lay there, on the border of the Starwood. Where the trees were like bones, their white trunks reaching into the colorless sky, toxic mushrooms consuming decaying wood. The caverns. They snaked beneath the ground, beautiful magic tainted by the bleached, tainted ground. She would drive the rebellion into the caverns, and they would *never* return.
