BACKGROUND
Either orphaned or just abandoned at such a young age that he can't remember anything about his parents, he lived a life of a street kid until he found his way to Pergamon's Arcane Home around the age of 15. A Spiral called Sunnathy took him in, like she took every single orphan she could find, and gave him food and a place to stay, as well as basic education. While young Orestes loved that he could now read and write, he wasn't quite as appreciative of her efforts as he should have been and fought with Sunnathy a lot, getting himself in trouble as often as he could.
With steady supply of food he grew up from scrawny kid to a rather strikingly beautiful Skydancer, drawing the attention of the wealthy. He got many admirers in time, enabling him to climb the social ladder and gain some wealth and influence for himself. That all ended with one particular suitor, Ferron. This Pearlcatcher was intent on having Orestes as his own. At first his gifts were more extravagant than all the others, but when that didn't work he flew into jealous rage, forcing Orestes to cut him out of his life for good. Ferron retaliated by going to a blood witch and cast a curse on him, stripping him of looks and graceful form and turning him into a Tundra. And if that wasn't yet enough, the first time Orestes tried to turn to his two-legged meihin form after the change, he found it completely transformed too. Instead of tall and slender he was now short and wide, coarse instead of soft, hairy instead of smooth, monster instead of beauty. To be honest he turned into a quite normal looking Tundra meihin, except the fur, that was not normal. But the trauma of the event was so bad that monster was the only thing he was able to see when he looked into a mirror.
Orestes tried to turn back for years. He went after knowledge, magic, all the different types of witches he could find. He funded this by seeking out those who were interested in his weird and feral meihin form. It was all in vain as the curse was too strong and somewhere along the way he just gave up. Yet he continued to take advantage of those with twisted interest in his feral form as he craved for intimate contact with others, but considered himself too monstrous to get it otherwise.
He developed a personality that was callous and uncaring, cultivating an image of someone untrustworthy with loose morals. The expression on his face was always a lazy grin, meant to annoy and to keep others away and to hide what he really thought and felt. His only friend through next few decades was Phoenicia, who was there for him when the curse nearly drove him mad, and to some extent Phoenicia's wife Wrena. They've never really reached quite as friendly relationship but Orestes knows he can trust her.
CURRENT STORY
Despite being financially very well off Orestes needs his job. He himself might not be able to point out why, but he needs purpose for his life. That's why he joined the Guard in the first place, back when he was still a Skydancer and living a comfortable life, and that's why he's stayed. As the state of the Guard was so bad for so long, his job was secure despite his behaviour. This went on even when Eudoxia, a Ridgeback from Wind, was appointed as a captain and tasked with making the Guard a proper functioning force, as the reputation of the Guard was so bad that it took her years to fix it. But that she did and around year 5 of her being a captain Orestes finally started to feel a bit insecure about his job, as new recruits had started to show up and she appeared to be losing her temper with him now, something that was quite new and unnerving from the always calm and cold captain.
Orestes decided it was time to do something about it, to have a talk, try to get on her better side. He grabbed a bottle of nice wine and went to see her. She agreed to talk but using her meihin seemed to be an issue. He had changed into his as he trusted her to be at least honourable enough to not to tell anyone else about it and it felt weird that she wouldn't use hers. In the end he appealed to the rules of hospitality and manners as he wasn't keen on potentially arguing with someone who could squash him if she got angry enough. That finally made her begrudgingly change her form, which to his astonishment was completely feral, just like his. She was as scaly as he was hairy.
They did indeed have quite a talk, both getting to air out grievances they had about each other. But Orestes also got to see another side to Eudoxia. He wasn't sure if it was the wine or the unexpected similarity they shared, but seeing her express all these new emotions affected him and he got more confused as the night progressed. He ended up suggesting a bet, claiming that he could make her like him if he wanted to. He wasn't sure if he wanted to purposefully anger her or just see how she would react but to his bewilderment she actually agreed. Though not really meaning to challenge her seriously, he found he wasn't averse to the idea at all and so they spent the night together.
She was gone when the morning came and he found himself alone with his surprising new feelings and regret. So much regret. This wasn't how things were supposed to go at all. What followed was pretty much what he expected, a stony faced silence from her. He was a hideous monster after all. Until all of a sudden she approached him, to teach her how to fight as a meihin. That was something Orestes had done in secret for decades, knowing for sure he would be kicked out if anyone ever found out. Except she did not, confusing him even further. They spent the next 6 months trying to be friends while his feelings just kept getting deeper and deeper. Finally things came to a head when Orestes felt like he couldn't take it anymore and told her he would be leaving. This forced a confession of love out of her that he could hardly believe. It still feels a bit unreal for him at times.
They need to keep their relationship hidden as she is his captain, and so far Orestes hasn't gotten a single promotion in the Guard so he's the very lowest ranking member. But compared to his life before he doesn't mind some sneaking around, since he now has this wonderful person and so much happiness in his life.
