To Earn a Cafe
written by me

Percy left his home clan peaking over his shoulder. He had always wondered if it were really a good idea to leave so early, considering he really didn't have much going for him. He was a handsome fella and he could make a mean mocha latte, but was that enough? His parents had always encouraged him to follow his dreams. They wanted him to be happy, just like good parents should. But as Percy went struggling through the dense forests of the Labyrinth, he began to wonder if he'd made a mistake.

Stumbling on the gate of the Gladehaven was definitely an accident. The gate itself wasn't even noticeable until one looked hard enough at how the vines grew. The direction of it's growth was odd, sort of coming from all directions, forming a circle of foliage against what appeared to be the trunk of an enormous tree. The vines pulled apart slowly after Percy fell against them, causing him to fall again in the opposite direction. The poor, young tundra stared in awe as the gateway opened before him. Beyond that, the dark entrance was menacing in a way. But out from it came an even more menacing sight, miss Kes. The leader of the Warrior's Circle, she was often the first sight for unexpected guests.

"What business 'ave you, young man?" She asked with a loud, heavily accented voice. Percy's ears laid back to show he was not a threat.

"I...I haven't any, ma'am. I was just...stumbling through the forest, really. Trying to find a fresh start. It's been a few days, I admit, since I've come across a friendly face or clan."

Kes could see truth in his eyes and offered a small, toothy guardian smile.

"Aye, come on in then, lad. Meet those of the Gladehaven. We'll show yuh a warm bed and a safe night's sleep."

After meeting Orik and Arya, Percy had decided the Gladehaven was a beautiful place to see. Even if he didn't stay, he was happy to have visited. The dragons were all pretty wonderful and helpful. He spent his time for a few good days learning all that the survivalists could teach him. But on the day that he had intended to set out again, he decided to thank the clan with all that he could. A wonderful meal, prepared all by himself.

Percy was given allowance to the clan's food stores and spent the entire afternoon cooking and brewing together his finest tea recipe. The tundra was exhausted from the preparation, but he persisted. With help from Artio, the florist, a beautiful spot by the clan's river pool was decorated and fitted for a fine evening. Percy gathered every dragon in the clan and served his wonderful meal.

By the end of the night, Percy had been invited to stay with the clan by several dragons. Orik and Arya heard each kind word spoken as the dragons visited among each other. They gave each other one single look of recognition and Orik arose from his resting place against a mossy boulder.

"Attention, everyone, please. I have heard many praises of young Percy here tonight, and I'll add my own to the list. What a fine, well-crafted meal, Percy. And the tea! Delightful and warming, like home in a cup. I do believe that such talents would go appreciated here within our territories. I personally would like to invite you to stay."

Percy cried. He was an emotional little guy. But he gleefully accepted Orik's offer. From there, he built his own little shop and serves the best coffee and tea within miles of their territories.
