At first I read his name as Pompeii, and he is coloured like ash, and isn't Pompeius a Roman name anyway?
I imagine Pompeius to be a rather intimidating-looking dragon, who in actually is rather kind and quick to help where he's needed. If someone is starving and he has food, he would readily give it to them. Above all, I think he acts kind not for others, but for himself, as he's seen so many things in his life and has so many scars to bare that he doesn't want to see anyone else fall into what he's experienced.
