In Indivar's experience, those who live by the sword tend to die by it, and they often fail to recognize their fates until the moment has arrived. It is a tragedy, those existences on the edge of a blade; steel is so terribly fragile, so readily destroyed. A swordsman will never live as long as a dragon who has chosen another career.
And perhaps that is why he spends all his time among the silkworms. What else has Sornieth provided to match the grace of steel while outlasting its durability by leagues? Silk, after all, can turn a blade when spun right and woven well, and there is endless evidence that beautiful silk can turn heads as well. Swords, on the other hand, merely remove them. Which is the superior weapon then, hm?
But he is wise enough not to raise these questions in the presence of bladed brutes. His silks may protect him, but his silkworms have no defense, and without them, he is nothing. They take far too long to raise, to bond with, and it would be a fool's errand to risk their well-being, even by pointing out the obvious truth. Better by far to demure to an armed dragon than to provoke his ire. Pride can be mended with time, if it takes any damage at all. Why be offended by keeping the truth close when more pride can be taken in producing beautiful silks independent of any blade?
As a result, Indivar worries little for those that might sneer at his work, because in the end, his products will always be superior. A silk sash is more impressive than any scar, and a tapestry worth more than any amount of bloodshed. Silk is resilient, binding, everlasting, and with proper care, even the ages will struggle to harm it. Indivar's works last longer than most, too; some speculate that he enchants his art, but the fact of the matter is that he understands the power of silk deeply, and that is more effective than any magic in preserving the effort that fills each piece.
Maybe one day, he will take on an apprentice, someone worthy of his mantle. It would have to be a dragon who knows the value of only a single silkworm, one who can see potential and color and truth where there is, if only for a while, an empty loom and pots of dye. Indivar can accept nothing less in a protege than perfection, than harmony of ideals, and if it takes eons to find such a dragon, than so be it.
He is as strong as his silk. He can wait.
