ILLONUE - Diplomat
In Illonue's eyes, every diplomat should have some degree of spectacular magic available. Personally, she is quite partial to elaborate architectural feats born of ice, a skill she has carefully cultivated since arriving in the Frost Seelie Court. Perhaps she loves it because it comes so naturally to her. Perhaps she loves it because she never could have crafted such intricate works at home. Or perhaps she loves it for no particular reason at all beyond the joy in her heart every time she casts a spell.
She suspects it might have a little something to do with her upbringing, though. Born to the Clan of Severed Lightning, sheltered in the depths of the Shifting Expanse, there was no room for ice magics, and no time for grandiose display. There was function, and there was excess, and she was raised to steer far clear of the latter. She was royalty, if only through her mother's side of the family tree, and efficiency was paramount in every interaction; how else was she supposed to become a revered leader one day if she could not keep herself and her actions in perfect order?
But there is joy and beauty in excess, and while Illonue was acting as a diplomatic envoy between the Clan of Severed Lightning and the Frost Seelie Court, she realized what she could have, if only she were not bound to the Stormcatcher's lands. Her friendship with Shy, leader of the Court, showed her what the Southern Ice Fields were like, and what the tiny oasis at its heart could provide. There was color and life and song and dance, and the skies actually cleared rather than clouding over with crackling storms every hour of the day. It was stunning, and in some ways, it was heartbreaking, because it had taken so long for Illonue to understand that there was a world beyond the controlled sands of the Shifting Expanse.
She and Shy planned together during yet another diplomatic exchange between the two clans. Tensions were mounting, as the Clan of Severed Lightning had little appreciation for the excess of the Court, and war seemed like a possibility, hovering on the horizon. Marriage, though, could bring alliance, and even peace, so when the time came, Illonue and Shy were more than happy to announce their union.
It remains strictly political, as Illonue thinks of Shy as a dear friend, but never a romantic partner. Nonetheless, it has allowed Shy to leave her home behind and experience the wonders of the Southern Icefields in full, no matter how much excess they drip with. And it has allowed Illonue to indulge in frivolous magics, like fireworks made of exploding, colorful snowbursts, and great sculptures of ice, laden with minute architectural detail, some even big enough for dragons to wander through.
Sometimes, Illonue misses her old home, but truthfully, the Frost Seelie Court is the home that she has always needed most.
