A Tale of Secrets Misheard

I land in the daisies with a screech of joy, my golden scales reflecting the light of the moon on the pale flowers. I roll about, a large grin plastered on my face as I watch the fireflies dance about my head. I slow down as one lands on my snout, and I try my very best not to sneeze. The world is silent around me as I watch the little bug bounce off the bridge of my nose, spiraling away from me as if confused. I try to stifle a laugh, knowing it would likely send the poor thing flying.

Another bout of laughter catches me off guard, however, and I spin around, eyes wide. There she sits, her one red eye glimmering at me as I gawk at her. When did she get here?! I watch Captain Lila as she comes over, draping a wing over me.

“Y’know, the crew has quite a few treasure bags in the hold as to what you keep doing when we come to port, but I don’t think any of them thought it was this!” Her guffaw sends the firefly spinning away into the little grove, and a part of me wonders if the poor thing is alright. She follows my gaze, and I can feel her hold loosen.

“I’m sure the lil’ guy’s just fine, Arandor. No need to worry. They’re pretty tough.” I sigh as she pulls away, but the smile is still there. She tries her best to fold her arms, but has to settle with the claws on those stubby appendages barely touching each other instead. I can see her struggling to scowl at me, but that glimmer of laughter just won’t leave her eye.

“Now, what’re you doing out here? The rest of the crew’s in the Jolly Seadog, and last I heard they were talkin’ about the new Leviathan the Silver Raven got. Nearly tipped their entire ship!” She chuckles, but my laughter is muted by the thought of the tavern. Loud, boisterous drakes, hardened by the life of the sea and the monsters he gave them, all trying to get him to join in on their raucous screeching they try to pass as singing, keeping him up long past the crow of the rooster the next morning. I want to tell her all of this, how their songs and their tendency to practically sit on me just doesn’t mix well with me, but I can’t. Not to the Captain.

“I just like it out here. Helps me clear my head.” That’ll be good enough. I’m sure of it. Well, I’m pretty sure. I look over, and I see the smile has faded from her face as she looks at me. She looks up to the stars, her eyes locking on the moon as she watches with me. We stare for a bit, and I’m beginning to enjoy the silence between us. Then she breaks it.

“Y’know, I think I see where you’re coming from.” She looks over at me, smiling slightly before she goes on. “When I’m on the land, I feel lost and confused. I can’t make heads or tails of the layout of all these towns, and without the sea, I think I could get lost in a room with jus’ one door.” She chuckles for a moment, and I can’t help but huff a bit with her. “But when I’m out on the great blue…” She trails off, and I look over at her again. There’s a wistful look in her eyes, and I can’t turn away from her.

“I feel like I’ve found a part of me I never knew I’d lost. Like I can face anything that comes my way if only I keep to her course. Is that how you feel?” She looks over at me, and I pause, thinking. When I speak, my voice is soft, almost inaudible.

“In a sense. I feel like a part of me can be found in the fields, the groves, growing in the bushes and along the treeline. But I don’t feel as if I’m losing a part of me when I go out to sea.” I look down at the daisy in my claw, twirling the stem as it spins in the silver moonlight. “I know I’ll always find more, no matter where we go. We need the land as much as we do the sea, and when we reach the docks and ports along the way, there’ll be something new to add to me, to change me, for better or for worse.” I look up at the Captain, and I smile. “I may not be wed to the sea, but that doesn’t mean he won’t let me enjoy the parts of the world he can’t reach, nor does it mean he won’t let me share them with him.”

There’s a moment of silence after I finish, and I look back to the flower, realizing it’d be quite a beautiful addition to a crown I was making earlier. It is certainly large enough to be a centerpiece, and I’m sure it’d go well with the beautiful blues I had gathered earlier. I wait for her to say as much, but I don’t expect what she says next.

“Really?” I look up, startled. I can see the playful glimmer in her eye as she leaps up, startling some adventurous fireflies that had settled atop her wings. I can only think of the tragedy about to befall me at the sight. Captain Lila lets out a guffaw as she spins around.

“It all makes sense! All those flowers you gather, the crowns you make on the ship, the ones you send off to sea!!” She leans in close to me, and I cannot help but lean back. “You may not be wed to the sea, but that doesn’t stop you from fawning over her.” I think she’s trying to wink at me, but that doesn’t exactly work when you only have one eye. I try to protest as she charges away, her tail waving behind her as she calls out to me.

“I can’t wait to tell the crew about your crush on the great blue herself!” I watch her as she leaves, and the world goes quiet once more. I sigh, shaking my head, not even trying to tell her that I called the sea a ‘he’ and not a ‘she’ as she had said on the way out. She’s going to tell them all that I don’t find a pretty girl on the docks as they do because I’m like her. She’ll tell them I love the sea over all, and the flowers of the land come close behind it. None of it is true, of course. Not in the way she knows it.

I hear a whispering trill nearby, almost like a question, and I look over to see a small Skydancer peering at me, his sea-blue wings shimmering in the moonlight. He runs to my side, silent as the stars, and I place the daisy behind his crest, deciding it looks much better there. All I hear is a faint trill, and he practically leaps into the air with joy.

How do I tell them those crowns are for the Cabin Boy? Worse, how do I tell them that he would rather give them to the sea, watching the crowns change with each port, and how they shrink as the ship pulls ahead with the wind?

How do I tell them how it is not the sea that I love, but his silent son?

I sigh as I settle down next to the Skydancer, who closes his eyes as he curls up by my side. His wings are folded tightly against the breeze, and I let my own wing rest over him, barring the frigid air from chilling his feathers. I wouldn’t want him stuck on the land for too long with a cold. I let out a satisfied hum as I close my eyes.

Ah well.

I guess I’ll just have to tell them I’m still forever alone and mateless.

Arandor is mostly found gathering flowers such as evening-primroses, marigolds, you name it. The soft nocturne is
also known for making the prettiest flower crowns, with flowers of many kinds embroidered onto wooden headbands.
