Dr Calgene - 'Cally' - is the Keeper of the Genetically Modified Gardens. A biobotanist, the ambitious pearlcatcher specialises in the study of genetically engineered crops, and she runs the clan's biosphere which houses her many experiments. Hoping to perfect the science behind safe and healthy GM food and other plants, Cally aspires to help make the world a better and more productive place, but her ideals and methods are sometimes frowned upon by those who don't understand or agree with her.

A typical lightning flight dragon, Cally tends to be very focused, striving always for progress and never giving up when a theory doesn't work out. Yes there have been some "accidents", a few "unexpected results", but turnips with ears and glowing strawberries aren't enough to put this determined pearlcatcher off! The flying bananas were quite alarming though it's got to be said, and those involved agreed never to speak of it again.

Fortunately for Cally, the Sornieth press have yet to catch wind of any of those blunders, as The Lastsparks take their security very seriously. No unauthorised personnel are allowed in the biosphere, and data on all of the clan's ongoing research projects is classified and highly encrypted. There are still some who worry that important scientific information could be stolen and used for nefarious purposes, and fears that the developing technology may lead to serious ethical dilemmas are not alleviated when incidents such as the potatoes eating the carrots happen. But Dr Calgene continues doggedly on with her work, always looking at the bigger picture and hoping one day all her efforts will bear fruit. Preferably fruit that doesn't bite back..
