Biography

Although a Plague dragon by birth, Feralia spent most of her youth in Dragonhome. She was taken in at a young age by a traveling archaeologist on his way to Cairnstone Rest, seeking adventure and discovery among the ancient stones. Feralia showed a keen interest as well, but her motivations were very different. She deliberately sought out forgotten tombs in the hopes of plundering lost treasure. She had already made off with a few small but extremely valuable items.

One day, Feralia was exploring a passageway by herself when she felt a slight draft. Turning to face it, she saw that it was coming from a narrow opening in the wall. She wedged herself through and lifted her portable lantern high. Then, she nearly dropped it, overcome with sheer awe.

The walls of the chamber were covered in intricate paintings and etchings, the lines chiseled into the rock itself. They depicted dragons of every breed and color, but all with Earth-brown eyes. At the center was a repeating motif of the Pillar of the World, and something else, something looming in from the dark corners of the cave where her lantern couldn't quite reach. Feralia, transfixed, raised her lantern even higher and saw black claws in a cloud of shadows, reaching toward the painted dragons, clutching at the base of the Pillar.

But as Feralia stretched up to see the carvings, her lantern's light caught a flash of gold in the chamber. She turned and saw a huge heap of treasure in one corner. At once she began to examine it, hoping to pick out a few choice pieces. As she stuffed them into her satchel, she strangely couldn't stop thinking about the paintings and carvings. Certainly, she had seen plenty of old cave art before, and she was no true lover of archaeology for its own sake. But she found herself turning back, mesmerized by the bright dragons and Pillar, but even more so by the snatching claws of the shadow-creature.

Just then, the floor of the cave began to quake. Feralia panicked then and dove for the crack in the wall. She could feel something coming up from the darkness, could hear the echoes of its enraged screams. She didn't look back until she was safely on the other side of the rock wall. Then she turned and saw a talon reach out from the gap. It was barely skin and bone, a twisted, ravaged thing, but still wickedly sharp, and it must have belonged to a truly giant creature. The thing screamed again and Feralia thought she heard an echo of a dragon's roar there, broken and wasted away, but no less ferocious.

The noises attracted the attention of a nearby group of Earth Flight excavators. They caught Feralia with her spoils, and they could smell the stink of the dead creature on the cave walls. They grew terrified and sealed the entire passage with fallen rocks. They planned to haul Feralia to trial and strip her of her ill-gotten gold, but she escaped while they were still distracted with their deliberate cave-in. She left a good-bye note with her archaeologist and fled for the first home she had known, the Scarred Wasteland.

But Feralia couldn't shake the memory of those shadowy carvings. She surmised that they must be a depiction of the Shade and made a decision that was fairly un-Plaguelike: she decided to become a scholar, at least for a time, to understand them better. The best places for such things were the Starfall Isles or the Hewn City, and she chose the Isles. Studying the Shade was, of course, semi-forbidden in most regions of Sornieth, but she persisted until she found teachers.

Feralia soon became a leading expert on the history of the Shade. She knew of its comings and goings, prophecies that concerned it, cults that worshiped it, rituals that called on its power. Dressed in her stolen golden adornments and with her wings bearing tattoos of the night sky, a symbol that referenced the Shade, she was an imposing figure.

She never gave up tomb-raiding and still sneaks into Earth territory from time to time. Her interests are simultaneously turned beneath the ground to ancient barrows, and up above to the blackness behind the stars. She believes those two darknesses share commonalities. Maybe they are even connected.

Most of the time, Feralia lives with Clan Chaos Star. She has a healthy respect for the Sunforger dragons as well, although she hides from them her expertise on the Shade. She acts as a scribe, general mage, healer, and hunter for Chaos Star, and is quite talented at finding valuable trinkets for them to craft or sell. She struck up a relationship with Teuthis -- after all, both of them are fascinated by forbidden secrets.
